Ready for negative roles in films: Monica Bedi

Flooded with offers of 'weird scripts, Hindi film and television actress Monica Bedi today said she is ready for even negative roles.

"So far all along my career I have been playing positive characters. I am doing a negative role in the TV soap opera 'Saraswatichandra'. Now I am ready to do such negative characters even in films," Bedi told reporters here at the launch of a salon.

Regretting that she was being offered only 'weird scripts', Bedi said she is looking for strong character- oriented roles.

"Hindi film industry is changing for the better now and I am waiting to get good roles where I can prove myself as an actress," said the 39-year-old actresses known for roles in films like 'Suraksha', 'Jaanam Samjha Karo' and 'Jodi No. 1'. She had played the role of a DSP in the recently released Punjabi film 'Romeo Ranjha'.

Shot in the dark: This model will do anything for a TV show berth

With help from a politician, this model recently approached an actor and requested him to recommend her name to the makers of a reality show

This model recently grabbed headlines when she filed a case against a top gun and now she's trying to hog the limelight once again. Only this time, she wants to lock a berth in a reality show. Sources say that she even roped in a politician friend to make a case for her with a leading actor, requesting him to recommend her name to the show's makers.

Says a source, `This model is known to be in the news for wrong reasons. Recently, she managed to meet a politician who knows the actor well. She had a private meeting with this politician where she requested him to arrange a meeting with the star.` The source adds that this politico was initially reluctant to approach his actor friend but he eventually gave in and made her meet the actor.

`He had word with the actor and then they met at the actor's residence. The model then asked the actor if he could help her by suggesting her name to the show's makers.

To this the actor replied that choosing the contestants for the show is not in his hands. He told her that it's the production house and the channel who take the final call. Later on, he expressed his displeasure to the politician and questioned him as to why he had brought her along to his house,` says the source.

Diana Penty walks for Rocky S at LIFW

Diana Penty walks for Rocky S at LIFW
Actress Diana Penty, who debuted with "Cocktail", Friday stole the limelight as a show stopper for designer Rocky S at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014.

The actress walked the ramp, having donning a long black gown with detailed, diamond studded sequence work on the top. With open hair and minimal makeup, she looked gorgeous in Rock's outfit.

"I love black and I love this outfit. I am feeling great wearing this outfit," Diana told reporters post the show.

Rocky, who has collaborated with the Tresemme brand for this collection, says the stress that women experience because of their haircare issues was something they wanted to depict.

The designer, who has used more of black and white colours in all his outfits, says his collections are timeless and can be worn for red carpets.

"My collection is not a seasonal collection... it is a timeless collection and it can be worn for red carpets. I have worked a lot on this collection and all of them are hand crafted. Besides Diana absolutely justified my outfit."

Sharing Tresemme's philosophy that every women deserve to look their best at all times, Rocky brought alive this essence through a collection that was divided in two distinct parts and concludes with how every woman needs to take out time from a stressful life and indulge herself.

The Lakme Fashion Week, which kicked off Aug 19, will continue till Aug 24.

Rohit Shetty to direct 'Ram Lakhan' remake

Rohit Shetty to direct `Ram Lakhan` remake

Filmmaker Karan Johar is set to produce the remake of Subhash Ghai's 1989 film "Ram Lakhan" in association with the latter's Mukta Arts. Hit director Rohit Shetty has been roped in to helm the project.

"Here's the big announcement! Rohit Shetty & Karan Johar, in association with Mukta Arts, present RAM LAKHAN in 2016," read a message from the official Twitter handle of Karan's Dharma Productions, Friday.

The original "Ram Lakhan" featured an ensemble cast that included Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia and Raakhee. However, the actors for the remake are yet to be locked.

Ever since the news of a remake hit the social media, people have been suggesting the pairing of "Student Of The Year" actors Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra or "Gunday" stars Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor for it.

Can work while pregnant if director's ready: Rani Mukerji

Can work while pregnant if director`s ready: Rani Mukerji
Popular actress Rani Mukerji says her marital status won't affect her work and even a pregnancy won't come in the way as long as the director is comfortable.

After marriage, actresses often cut down on their work. Asked in a group interview if she too would do so, Rani said: "Not really."

She tied the knot with Yash Raj Films' head honcho Aditya Chopra in a hush-hush ceremony in Italy in April.

"Women try to cut down on work because they are pregnant and during that time they are physically not capable.

"In Hollywood, many actors work when they are pregnant. If a director is ready to work with me during my pregnancy, I will surely work," added the actress, who has recently shot down pregnancy rumours.

The actress, who continues to work post-marriage, admits a married actress' career hinges on "how supportive her husband is."

"Adi (Aditya Chopra) is a very supportive husband. I don't think he would want me to slow down. I don't know what my decision is going to be when I become a mother," said the actress whose "Mardaani", about trafficking of girls, hits screens Friday.

"I don't know how I will continue my journey in films. But I am in love with my job," she added.

Although Bollywood has come a long way when it comes to on-screen kissing, there are actresses who aren't comfortable locking lips or doing intimate scenes after marriage.

But Rani doesn't have any such hang-ups. She feels doing a particular scene is an actor's "individualistic choice".

"It also depends on whether she comes from a family that is not very modern in their outlook, or is she married into a family that doesn't give her the liberty to do certain things.

"I am married to Aditya, who is both a producer and director, and I think his mindset is very modern. I don't think he will ever come in my way of deciding what I want to do or what kind of films I want to be a part of.

"For us, a film means work. It is not something we look at from a common man's point of view," she added.

Every film's story is a subject that needs to be told in a proper way, she said.

"We portray it in a certain way. So when you get married, it's a very personal choice of that individual of how she wants to go about her career."

Criticism doesn't worry her either,as she knows that scrutinising artists for their choice of work is common and it has nothing to do with their marital status.

"If the actor has a hit, she is praised. But if she has a flop, people criticise her bad choice. So scrutiny comes whether (an actor is) unmarried or married. At the end of the day, one should do things that he or she likes to do," she said.

Meanwhile, like any wife, Rani wishes the best for her husband.

She said: "Definitely, I want this film ('Mardaani') to work. In fact, from now on I will not only pray that my films work, I will also pray that all YRF films are superhits (laughs)."

Bollywood films that were banned due to political reasons

Bollywood films that were banned due to political reasons

With the recent ban on Punjabi film, 'Kaum De Heere', we take a look at films that ran into trouble on account of politically motivated protests against them

To say that Bollywood is a hotbed of controversy is perhaps not an understatement. From star lives to films dealing with sensitive subjects, there is no death of instances when B-town has kicked up a storm. In a country as diverse as ours, on far too many occasions, films have inadvertently rattled certain sections of society, leading to protests against the concerned films. And though India has become more liberal in its approach over the years, sensitive subjects still run the risk of getting banned.

A case in point is the Punjabi film, Kaum De Heere, that will not be released in the country since the Indian government has imposed a last minute ban on the film. The film is said to be based on the events leading up to the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. The movie was banned earlier this year by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), after which it was released in other parts of the world on March 14. Following this, its makers accommodated some changes in the movie and soon it was cleared by the Censor Board only to be banned again after the Centre withdrew its censor certification.

Hitlist gives you the lowdown on some films that ran into trouble on account of politically motivated protests against them...

Movie Review: 'Katiyabaaz'pulls us out of our blissful cocoons

Movie Review: `Katiyabaaz`pulls us out of our blissful cocoons

Dir: Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa

Rating:**** Katiyabaaz is one of those documentaries, which do a good service by pulling us out of our blissful cocoons and holding the mirror to certain harsh realities within our country.

It is heartening to see this National Award-winning documentary getting a theatrical release and jostling for space amidst other commercial ventures.

Loha Singh, the protagonist, has a personality as solid as his name. His job is to go around stealing electricity from transformers in the areas of Kanpur and provide free connection to anybody who offers him his price. Loha has no remorse and defies his stand with a logic that you are tempted to be convinced with. The industrial town of Kanpur, as the documentary shows, has been grappling with grossly inadequate supply of electricity, thanks to the absence of new power plants.

Katiyabaaz, directed by Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa, looks at the situation in a straight, non-judgemental manner and presents the facts as it is, without taking sides.

The burgeoning and worrying issue of power cuts in Kanpur district has led to desperate struggle between the citizens, bureaucrats and politicians. In a state where citizens are powerless for days altogether, Loha Singh is looked at as a messiah of the powerless as he brandishes his cutter and uses every trick possible in order to get them to see the light through illegal connections. In comes IAS officer Ritu Maheshwari, who's out to cut all those illegal connections and get the money flowing back into the now almost empty KESCO treasury. Most people are done with the excuses and would rather trust Loha Singh than any of the bureaucrats.

Extremely well-researched, Katiyabaaz is all that a good documentary should be. The camera follows Loha Singh relentlessly even as he goes about his duties and soon Maheshwari is getting increasingly despondent with the situation. Ironically, in a situation which seems hopeless, you find hope and the story of survival.

Please go and watch this one, as doing so would encourage many such documentaries to see the light of the day.

Why Hrithik Roshan refrains from talking his heart out?

Why Hrithik Roshan refrains from talking his heart out?Hrithik Roshan is unlike other Bollywood stars of the present generation. In an era of over the top promotions, whereby a superstar is not beyond planting stories and discreetly dropping controversial quotes for a film's promotion, Hrithik has always preferred to maintain his aura of an aloof, unreachable, larger than life human.

So it's surprising when Duggu decides to play the bugle around a film's release. Before the reader jumps to conclusions, thus bugle is also a posh, sleek one- one that sounds gently, remains with you for a while after it stops playing and has a satin touch (a bit like classic jazz). Hrithik will be meeting select media members today evening in Mumbai to present the latest song 'Tu Meri' from "Bang Bang', the upcoming mega flick. With him sporting lithe dancing shoes, and Katrina working her backside off to match the dancing star step by step, this song is going to rock charts, youtube, radio stations, what have you! That's a given. Yet, the presentation is a 'Please No Stories, No Photo Ops' gathering for media members he trusts- to acquaint them with his film. Note that Hrtihik used a similar approach- eager, warm and yet not over the top- to present the film's teaser to just 45 members of press earlier.

'Bang Bang', despite being an eye poppingly expensive 150 crore flick, with little chance of actually making a profit, is going to flush out everything else in sight (a bit like the march of the Romans), a prediction I safely make. So publicity is not a must for this film, and therefore, marketing strategy of Fox Star is keeping it limited and on a personal basis.
The blitz of PR will follow, but from what we hear, this too, will be done selectively, a welcome change in Bollywood for now.
Having said that, Hrithik meeting the press personally, is a surprise. During Kites, a film where he bet his money and time with 100 per cent commitment, Hrithik did just 15 interviews and made less than 20 public appearances. That the film flopped didnt ring in a change in his PR strategy as a superstar, didn't shake him up to sign up countless brands or films. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara had him enthusiastically take part in promotions, but the company of childhood friend Farhan Akhtar made it easy for the reluctant speaker in him to survive the constant media scrutiny here. Add to that, his ability to keep attention focused on the team, and once again, Hrithik's subtlety shows up.

It's important to note the background of Hrithik's press strategy. He fumbles, a fact he admits to. Once, while doing an interview with TV 9, he fumbled thrice, and stuttered visibly. He requested the reporter to let him go, citing that he had been doing 5 interviews for a brand, and he isn't dealing with prepared replies here. Disarmed by his honesty, the reporter graciously obliged. That could be a factor in meeting the media infrequently, and in keeping a distance from SMS planting.
Recently, with his divorce having shaken public imagination, Hrithik silently bore the brunt of speculations around him being adulterous. What really happens with a couple remains between them. But he never defended himself, and in his first statement about the divorce, hurt showed when he mentioned that Suzanne was moving on. He raged and ranted on social media when speculations about his wife's alimony demands made it to newspapers. He defended her throughout.

Few know that the couple have mutually signed an affidavit declaring that they claim no rights to each other's assets, on their divorce document. This means, Suzanne will have to keep what Hrithik gives, she has forfeited her right to claim anything more.

As for his change in media and PR strategy, he now has a new PR person, one who manages media relations for leading stars Katrina, Kareena and Priyanka. Post his divorce, he did make it known that his erstwhile publicist had not done 'a good enough job' of damage control. Stars often tend to blame their staff for reasons beyond the logical during tough times.

Perhaps his keenness to connect with few press members emerges from trying to build a personal equation. Having been super busy with Bang Bang, and having suffered serious health issues, its been nearly 2 years since he actually spoke his heart out. Add to that, his personal life hitting crisis, and the elusive superstar now feels the need to be a little more interactive.

How this new strategy actually plays out for him, is difficult to predict. But his larger than life star persona remains unchanged.

Kiran Rao likes nude Aamir Khan on the 'PK' poster

Seems Aamir Khan has no qualms in revealing the private "husband-wife" talks that he shares with his partner Kiran Rao. The Dhoom 3 actor created much a 'dhoom' at a recent event where he arrived to promote his upcoming release PK, by revealing an intimate remark with respect to biwi Rao.

Though the event aimed at unveiling the second poster Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial PK which had Khan aping a band baja master, the guests were more curious to know about the film's first poster that has Aamir posing nude.

The actor was not surprised with the furore the poster created so much that even went out to reveal his wifey's remark on his full bounty antics! Quintessential to his character in PK Khan in Bhojpuri accent said, "Hamri joru ka reaction (seeing the nude poster) ekdam tanatan tha."

While his second half admires his bold attempt, we wonder what the rest of his family has to say about his daring stunt!

Elaborate dance rehearsals for Bang Bang leave Katrina Kaif with a crick in the neck

At an informal gathering with selected media presence, Katrina Kaif, in a jolly and friendly mood, did make for a light hearted moment when she cribbed about a crick in the neck. In her own words, Katrina is currently rehearsing for a really elaborate and expensive dance number from 'Bang Bang', the final portion of the film to can, and being done in Mumbai.

Kat seems to have hurt her neck during these rehearsals, and at this gathering, was heard saying that she isn't fond of elaborate, long rehearsals as they are very technical and not as much fun as real life, impromptu dancing. Well, we sure are surprised, considering Katrina's superb dancing skills on display in the suspended acts in "Dhoom 3'

Alia Bhatt offered Mani Ratnam film?

She might be the butt of jokes in Twitter, and a favourite of twitter memes, but Alia Bhatt is no dumb chick. The petite actor has apparently been offered a film, a romantic comedy, by Mani Ratnam.

We hear the ace director was impressed by Alia's work in Highway and 2 States, and as he is looking for a younger actress, she is his first choice for his forthcoming film. Mani has pushed his other telegu film with Aishwarya, Nagarjuna and Mahesh Babu for now.

However, Alia is keeping mum on the project for now.

Ratnam has positively influenced the careers of many leading women of the industry, giving them one of their best roles. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Manisha Koirala, Preity Zinta are some of them.

Are Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan cheating the audience?

Are Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan cheating the audience?

Farah Khan's Happy New Year starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead is creating quite a buzz for being shot at exotic locations in Dubai. The trailer of the film highlights the famous Atlantis, The Palm hotel, where most of the film is said to be shot. However, contradictory to what is being promoted, a source close to the project reveals that most of the film is shot in Mumbai and only a few portions have been shot in Dubai!

Reveals the insider, "A replica of key Dubai locations and even the parts of Atlantis hotel (where a lot of crucial sequences unfold) were built up in Mumbai. Thus the exteriors of Atlantis are real (captured on real location) but the interiors of the hotel are not real as they were created ditto at Mumbai based film studios." One such interesting set up which took a mamoth of a task to construct was the set of World Dance Championship.

"Farah Khan was very particular that the set looks very international. World Dance Championship or WDC as seen in the trailer is a platform for world dancers who would be competing against each other in the film. The sequence is shown to be happening inside the Atlantis hotel, but in real it was shot at Film City, Mumbai," reveals the source.

As per the insider, a team of 150 people got together to erect the World Dance Championship set which was 150 feet long and 60 feet tall (close to a six storey building) structure, in just a matter of 20 days.

"Apart from being vast and glamarous, the set is extremely mechanical. A lot of hydraulics have been used so you see certain portions of the stage moving up and down, rotating left and right as per requirement. It's a visual treat onscreen," adds the source.

Set for an October 24, Diwali release, Happy New Year is Shah Rukh's third film with Farah after Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. The film also brings together the hit Srk-Deepika jodi after their successful stints in films like Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express. The movie also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani among others.

Deadly inspirations: When Bollywood's dangerous action sequences were aped

Indulging in Bollywood fantasies by blindly aping dangerous onscreen action sequences comes at its own price. Many youngsters have tried to imitate stunts in Bollywood films, often leading to fatal or near-fatal results

While our actors live life on the edge in their onscreen avatars, some fan-atics seem to love doing that in real life too.

The video of a youth crossing the railway tracks seconds before a Mumbai local passes by has recently gone viral.

It is a replication of a scene from Salman Khan's latest film, Kick, where the superstar leaves his bicycle behind and crosses the train tracks seconds before a train passes by.

Even as the Railway Protection Force (RPF) appeals against such harakiri, we take a look at film stunts that have inspired fans to copy them thus leading to fatal or near-fatal consequences.

The video of a youth crossing the railway tracks seconds before a Mumbai local passes by has recently gone viral

Film: Ghulam (1998)
The incident:
In 2011, 14-year-old Mohammed Afzal Raja died while trying to copy actor Aamir Khan's infamous train stunt from the film Ghulam.

Aamir Khan in Ghulam

A resident of West Vinod Nagar, New Delhi, Mohammed tried to race a speeding local train. The boy then tried to jump over the train tracks, but he did not notice a fast running train that was coming from the opposite direction. The train hit him and he succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Film: Krrish (2006)
The incident:
While Rakesh Roshan's Krrish created waves at the box office, it proved to be disastrous for Shivam, a nine-year-old from Patna, Bihar, who jumped from a five-storeyed building in 2006 because he apparently wanted to 'fly like Krrish'.

Hrithik Roshan in Krrish

Luckily, the boy survived after spending a considerable period of time in the ICU of a local hospital. Reports say that his neighbours had gone on record to state that Shivam idolised Hrithik Roshan and wanted to be like the superhero.

In the same year, Vishnu, a young man working in a hotel in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, jumped from the balcony of a film theatre after watching this superhero flick. He suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to the district hospital. In his statement to the police, he admitted that he was a big fan of Hrithik and had tried to ape his favourite actor. The police registered a case of attempted suicide against him.

Film: Dhoom 2 (2006)
The incident:
The year 2006 saw the release of Krissh and Dhoom 2, two of Bollywood's biggest action-thriller hits. Sadly, both these films seem to have influenced teenagers in not so positive ways.

Abhishek Bachchan in Dhoom 2

In December 2006, Rohit Kalekar, a 13-year-old Mumbai resident, stole R13,000 from his uncle's home and bought a battery-operated motorbike. He even changed his attire to match Hrithik's look. He spent hours cruising on the Western Express Highway before the police spotted him and took him to the station.

Film: Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
The incident:
In 2012, Bangalore resident Mohammed Faizan lost his life after attempting to copy Salman Khan's train stunt from Ek Tha Tiger. The school student wanted to show his friends how Salman Khan had jumped off the train in the spy thriller. He climbed on top of a stationary train, Golden Chariot, and was thrown off it when he touched a high-tension wire. He fell head first on the platform with severe burns. Though he received immediate treatment at a local hospital and later at Nimhans, he could not survive the accident.

Hollywood calling
In 2012, the love for Batman (see pic) and his escapades seems to have cost Shubham Shailendra Kambale, 12, his life. Kambale died in Pune after aping a stunt of the popular DC character.

The boy tied a sari to a five-feet ladder and tried descending to the ground with it. However, the sari got entangled round his neck and choked him to death.

Action directors speak out

It's very tough to preventing people from doing such acts. Youngsters and kids don't realise that actors and stuntmen take a lot of precautions before performing a stunt.

Abbas Ali Moghul
There is an ambulance on standby and it takes hours of rehearsals before a shot is taken. Also, disclaimers are displayed on the screen during action sequences and yet people don't pay attention to them. I have read reports about boys bunking school and going to isolated locations in order to perform stunts. Parents should keep tabs on their kids' behaviour and educate them about these things since the craze for cinema seems to be infinite. At times, it's tough to show reason to people who think of themselves as heroes.

The sad fact is that kids don't think how their lives will be affected if their attempts go haywire. Once a stunt is successfully executed by a kid/teenager, he keeps on repeating it in order to show off, which is again hazardous.

Mahendra Verma

If a kid or a teenager really loves action, there are professional training institutes that can guide them in the right fashion. Nowadays, many action sequences are digitally created. I am hoping such incidents will stop if we show clips informing people that such sequences are computer-generated effects. It's stupid when people think that they can re-create onscreen stunts in real life. Nowadays, stunts in films are quite safe due to VFX. Many daring stunts are created through computer graphics.

Sham Kaushal
People need to realise that. Films and advertisements that feature stunts have a disclaimer saying that no one should attempt them at home. As an action director, I would request young people to refrain from taking part in such activities just for the sake of an adrenaline rush. When a young child or a teenager dies, it's a real tragedy for the family that spends years in grief. As far as videos of stunts going viral is concerned, any young person with knowledge of graphics can copy paste images to fabricate a daring stunt. So, there is no guarantee that he has done it himself.

Movie Review: 'Mad About Dance' - fails to make a mark!

Movie Review: `Mad About Dance` - fails to make a mark!
Cast: Saahil Prem, Amrit Maghera, Salah Benlemqawanssa, Akhilesh Unnithan, Raashul Tondon, Abhishek Saha

Director: Saahil Prem

Stars: **1/2

A big dance fan?? If yes! then you might find the film a little worthy but if by any chance you are not then I suppose this is not the film you would wish to see! The first half of the film is relativity slow but in the second half the film seems to pick up the pace, withal, Salah's performance does add stars to the climax.

A film about passion for dance, rejections, friendship, and about achieving your dream, Sahil has not only acted, directed and written the film but he has also worked on the music of the film with Dr Zeus. The film does highlight few social aspects like dysfunctional family, racism etc. but the main plot of the film revolves around an Indian amateur dancer fly's aboard to meet his dance idol and join his crew.

The movie starts with Aarnav (Sahil) an amateur dance, sitting in a bank for getting his loan sanctioned as he wants his dance crew to participate in an international dance competition and represent India. But when bank informs Aarnav that due to some reservations they won be able to grant him loan! That is when he hits into to flashback.. (I must warn you! almost 99 per cent of film runs in flashback)

So, (flashback) Arnav came to Sheffield, UK to meet his dance idol Ceaser, and join his dance crew, whereas his parents think their boy is in UK to get MBA degree. In his journey to achieving the goals Aarnav makes some very good friends (you know the true Indian friends) which includes all Richie Rich Punjabi boys to hard working and ambitious South Indian boys.

Getting back to the movie Arnav initially struggles to meet his idol but apparently when he gets a chance to meet him Arnav fails.. However Aashira (Amrit) (Indian girl who is not so proud of being one) who is a back dancer in Ceaser's crew gets her eye on Arnav.

Sahil Prem's curly tress if I may say would definitely catch your attention, and Amrit Maghera's 'Yeah' after every line, emphatically would get clutched into your head!

Arnav along with his friends and his love Aashira form own dance crew (strictly Asians) and have a face off with Ceaser's crew to which they lose again.. With a little bit of drama and dance the movie moves further (rather the movie moves at a snails pace) and Arnav's dance crew plans another face off and participate in the ultimate dance off challenge and guess what they wins the challenge!! yeaaahh!! (I mean not technically he has a tie- with Ceaser's crew) Nevertheless he and his crew proves Ceaser that they can dance!

The movie has a few another plots too like a boy who struggles to get admission in a college for MBA , a rebellious girl who regrets her father walking out on her family, a boy who had come to Sheffield to become a dancer but fails achieve his dream, etc. The film has impressive dance but it fails to keep up the interest and becomes incredibly slow towards the mid.

But listen up if you walk out in the middle of the film, I am sure you will miss out the best part of it which is AJ's (Salah Benlemqawanssa) performance.. which is the climax! I wish we could have seen more of him in the film as he just mesmerizes the audience with his exemplarating moves. The film could not have a better ending!

It seems to be that it was Sahil's dream project as he did a decent job as an actor, director, music director, writer and choreographer. But we feel he had to much on his plate and was unable to do give a perfect finish to the film. We could see a little loop-holes in his dancing on screen, and the female lead Amrit Maghera needs to seriously polish her acting skills. Alas! Our verdict on the film **1/2 stars (Salah's incredible dance moves in the end, earned one star)

Movie Review: It's time for 'Singham' and 'Dabangg' to make way for 'Mardaani'

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Sanjay Taneja, Jisshu Sengupta, Anil George, Mona Ambegaonkar

Director: Pradeep Sarkar

Rating: ***

There is no denying the fact that there are certain genres in Bollywood which have remained somewhat like a siamese with the art of cine making ever-since its inception. And undoubtedly women centrism is one of them.

Be it "Mother India" the epic melodrama of 1950's , Ketan Mehta's "Mirch Masala", Rajkumar Santoshi's "Damini" or the recent ones like "NOKJ", "The Dirty Picture" and Sujoy Ghosh's "Kahaani", whenever our Bollywooders have tried to make their cine dreams sail on the rudder of women centrism most of the times they have succeeded in making them reach on the other shore. But this doesn't mean that "women centrism" or women centric cine ideas are fated to earn the accolades. Rather it's the venturesome story line lying underneath the entire cine enterprise and the valiant storytelling of our cine jugglers which has always succeeded in pleasing the cine sense of cine zealots. And the triumph of movies like "Chak De India", "NOKJ", "The Dirty Picture" and "Kahaani" on the BO and among the critics lobby conspicuously corroborates aforementioned fact.

Ever since the day when first movie of Bollywood circumscribed around the core women centrism made it to big screen, the woman on center stage has thoroughly transformed from an ABLA (a forlorn materfamilias) to SABLA (a sinewy dame). Who in this era of human civilization can fight for her rights and if required then can even wallop the baddies. And the recently released women-centric-cum-crime-thriller cine delight of Pradeep Sarkar starring Rani Mukherjee certainly belong to the latter ilk.

Well after seeing last few cine crafts of Sarkar probably no one would have thought that someday this ace cinematician will have a tryst with such a bold cine fable. But with sinewy performer like Rani in the anterior of the camera Sarkar once again astonished everyone with his cine experimentation.

Mardaani, the women centric crime drama of Sarkar is about a crime branch rough-and-tough cop, Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukherjee), who lives in Mumbai with her husband Dr Bikram Roy (Jisshu Sengupta) and her lil niece Meera. On a fateful day Pyaari a destitute girl Pyaari ( Priyanka Sharma) gets kidnapped from her shelter home. Soon after getting the news about Pyaari's disappearance Shivani starts rummage for her. But with frames rolling ahead she has a tryst with unexpected where she get to know that there is a turpitude nexus of human trafficking and drug peddling functional in Mumbai. After getting the sniff of this opprobrious cobweb Shivani decides to unearth this nexus and rescue all those who have fallen prey to it. So does Shivani succeeds in her objective and what follows when she has a rendezvous with the mastermind Walt (Tahir Raj Bhasin) of this vile world of flesh trade and drug trafficking.

Well as far as story-line of Mardaani is concerned then one needs to admit it munificently that plot of "Mardaani" is predictable up-till great extent. But that does not mean that it lacks that fire which is required keep viewers' attention fastened to the big screen. Because despite having a predictable course "Mardaani" never gives you a single moment, where you afford to take your eyes off the screen. And the thing which is thoroughly laudable about the plot of "Mardaani" is that from commencement till culmination it remains so simple, realistic and faithful to its spirit that you at once start affiliating with it. So kudos for the penmanship of Gopi Puthran.

Although at some place capricious instances embedded in the story-line may not go well with the sensible hemisphere of human psyche of some of the viewers, but those minor boo-boos can be overlooked when larger picture in the offering is clap worthy. Besides what is praiseworthy and pertinent to mention about Mardaani's plot is that despite being a commercial cine venture it up-till great extent succeeds in sending across a social message conspicuously as well as obliquely.

Coming to screenplay of "Mardaani", then after seeing Sarkar tapping the right chords, it's once again proved that whenever Sarkar takes any cine project in his hands he is quite clear about his course of action and the shape of the end product. Be it "Parineeta", "Laga Chunnari Mein Daag" or "Lafangey Parinde" whenever Pradeep has made himself comfortable in the chair of director, he has always come up with a laudable end product, despite some very mediocre cine concepts in his hand. Even "Mardaani" is no exception to that.

Well call it the cinematic dexterity of Sarkar or his vision from the very first frame till the consummation "Mardaani" never looses the appeal which a crime thriller with a message to communicate needs to have. Sans any redundant frills like unrealistic action or dialoguebaazi to add to the luster of the movie, Sarkar keeps everything well within the proportions and focused that too without any unwanted aural intruders. Although second half losses its pace a bit and climax too gets preachy and marks an abrupt end to a marvelously flowing narration which could have had a more realistic end. But just like the story-line even this minor error is worth neglecting because for most of the time the gazes and attention of the viewers remain glued to the big screen because of the quality content in the offering.

Cinematography of Arthur Zurawaski who captures the milieu with utmost excellence is top notch, and even in editing department Sanjib Dutta has done a great job by adroitly trimming obtruded chunks. Action sequences of Manohar Verma are quite realistic and looks exclusively designed for a women centric cine flick. Background score of Julius Packiam very well compliments the spirit of the movie.

Well as far as performances are concerned then there is no denying the fact that throughout the run time of "Mardaani" there is just one gem which literally keeps everyone mesmerized by its brilliance and that is Rani Mukherjee. Although Rani embraced a de-glam avatar for "Mardaani" but in-spite of that she proved that when it comes to proving the mettle of her acting prowess then no one can beat her.

Be it the dutiful attitude of a tough cop or the agony of a woman in search of a girl for whom she cares, or mouthing those cuss words, Rani portrays everything with such a conviction that you get compelled to gaga over the acting prowess of this sinewy performer. And in fact it won't be wrong to say that this time Rani has set her performance benchmark much higher then the one which she set with NOKJ.

At times it is seen that when some newbie shares the screen-space with a seasoned actor like Rani then he or she often gets overshadowed, but in the case of "Mardaani" and its antagonist Tahir Raj Bhasin nothing of that sort seems to be happening. Despite having a chocolate boy like looks Tahir conveniently manages to portray the character of a ruthless kingpin of the vile world of human and drug trafficking.

Rest of the supporting cast Jisshu Sengupta, Anil George, Mona Ambegaonkar doesn't get much scope to exhibit their acting excellence due to the nature of the script, but whatever they got they perform it with aplomb.

To sum up, well I don't want to sound like an extreme feminist, but still I don't have any qualms in saying that with a socially relevant content at its root. Decorated with superbly laudable performances of protagonists and a praiseworthy execution by those behind the camera, "Mardaani" is certainly one such women centric crime thriller which is miles ahead of many of cop sagas featuring the male protagonists and will be admired by even those who are die hard "Dabangg" or "Singham" fans. So for this stupendous and mighty cop saga I am going ahead with three out of five stars.
