Remo D'Souza: Dance shows on TV changed Bollywood's dancing style

Choreographer-director Remo D'Souza, who is currently judging TV show 'Dance +', says dance-based reality TV shows have over the years had their effect on Bollywood, resulting in the influx of new forms in the dancing style of the film industry.
Remo D'Souza
Remo D'Souza
D'Souza, who started his TV journey with the first season of "Dance India Dance" as a mentor in 2009, said that since then, the dancing scenario in the country has changed a lot and people have become more educated about different dance forms.
"After we started that reality show which I was a part of long back, the whole scenario of dancing has changed in India. Everyone was educated about dancing and they came to know about all the dance forms in India. Because of that, the film industry has also changed, its dancing has changed.
"Initially we had only few western styles like break dance and hip-hop, but now we have actors doing krumping, contemporary and everything in film songs. So it is a big change that I've seen after the dance reality shows," D'Souza told IANS in an interview here at the "Dance +" set.
The 43-year-old, who has been a part of several shows like "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" and "Nach Baliye" and has directed the Bollywood dance film franchise "ABCD", feels dance shows are now a "big thing" and people have started accepting dancing as a career.
"When we started the first season of 'Dance India Dance', the dancers who came, were not sure about dance reality shows. So this show was a change, and after the first season, people came to know that even dancing can be a career.
"Now there are people who train themselves to come to reality shows -- they train for years -- and they want to be a part of them because it is a big thing right now. Dancing can change your life and it has changed so many lives in all these years... it changed my life also," he said.
Talking about "Dance +", which is currently airing on Star Plus, D'Souza said he is surprised to see how much unexplored talent there is in the country.
"I am very excited because even after doing so many shows and making films on dance, I still got surprised in the first episode we shot. It was amazing to see it all and I was shocked to know that we still have so much talent and I've still not seen it all. It's like a different kind of talent I'm seeing this time," he said.
The show features solo, duet and group performers and provides a platform to dancing talent from all over the country.
"Sometimes we miss on these unique dancers because we look out for something else. So in this show, we're concentrating on only those unique dancers -- not only solos, but duets and groups also. When one looks for solo dancers, the duets and the groups are left behind, but in this show, we're targeting all kinds of dancers," D'Souza said.

Mishal Raheja: Wanted to come back on TV with strong role

TV actor Mishal Raheja, best known for his roles in shows like 'Laagi Tujhse Lagan', 'Love Story' and 'Maharakshak Aryan', will next be seen in the love saga 'Ishq Ka Rang Safed' as Viplav. He says the role 'perfectly syncs' into the type of comeback he wanted on the small screen.
Mishal Raheja

"I wanted to make a comeback to the small screen with a strong character with a difference. Viplab fit in perfectly and was in sync with what I had in mind. Besides, in a female-centric industry, it is rare that you bag a character which has much do in a soap," Mishal said in a statement.
"'Ishq Ka Rang Safed' gives me an opportunity to do a lot with my character since it is a show with several layers, colours and transitions," he added.
Set against the backdrop of culturally rich Banaras, "Ishq Ka Rang Safed", which will be aired on Colors starting August 10, will focus on the story of a young widow Dhani and her love story with Viplav.
Eisha Singh, who is making her acting debut with the show, will be seen playing the role of Dhani. The actress says she is "lucky" to have bagged this role.
"At the threshold of my journey as an actor, essaying the role of the young widow Dhani, will add great value to my experience. While playing a bubbly girl-next door appeals to every young actor, I feel lucky to have landed a challenging role such as Dhani," Eisha said.
"Eminent Bollywood actresses such as Vidya Balan and Preity Zinta have played roles which have been in contrast to their age, but these roles have only enhanced their performance as an actor. I too am certain that 'Ishq Ka Rang Safed' will groom me in the right direction as an actor," she added.
Apart from Mishal and Eisha, the show will also star Arun Bakshi, Nishikant Dixit and Vidya Sinha.

The 34-year-old, who has daughters Honor, 7, and Haven, 3, with husband Cash Warren, says she was worried about the opinions of other mothers when she gave birth to her eldest child, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
"Doesn't it feel like the mean girl thing from high school sort of just transforms into adulthood through motherhood? I think it has to do with hormones, right?
"And then your hormones go crazy again when you're pregnant and having a baby - and even when you're breastfeeding. And I feel like maybe it's just all those hormones, and people don't know where to put their energy, so they just start clashing," Alba told Yahoo! Parenting.
While Alba had a bad experience in the past, she refuses to let other new mothers feel the same way.
She said: "Now I'm one of those moms that gives you too much advice that you may or may not want. I think the biggest thing is that what works for you, or what works for your friend, isn't going to work for everyone. There is no right or wrong.
"I have two very different girls. The way that I parent one is different than the way that I parent the other. There's no cookie-cutter way of going about it. I think we as women - and as moms - need to show younger girls that we support each other no matter what and to try and not be so judgmental."

"Seven-seasons-and-out has never been the (internal) conversation. The question is: How much beyond seven are we going to do? Obviously we're shooting six now, hopefully discussing seven (showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are).
“(I) feel like there's two more years after six. I would always love for them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now," said Lombardo.
'Game of Thrones' is based on George R.R. Martin's novel 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.
The fifth season of the show has been concluded with one of the most loved characters Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) meeting an untimely end. The next season is being filmed and one of the lead actresses Emilia Clarke noted that the upcoming season will be 'epic' with loads of 'shocking' moments.
However, Lombardo did not rule out the possibility of a spin-off series like 'Fear the Walking Dead' and 'The Walking Dead.'
"I would be open to anything that Dan and David wanted to do about 'Game of Thrones' or any subject matter," Lombardo said.

'Jai Ho' actress Daisy Shah, who is currently shooting for the sensuous franchise 'Hate Story 3', says she doesn't have any apprehensions about turning sensuous and evil for the film.
Daisy Shah

"Actors shouldn't have any limitations, is what I've heard and learnt. So if you are playing a character, you are that character. So if it's the film's requirement to turn sensuous, it's fine. If it's to turn evil, fine," said Daisy when asked about her character in 'Hate Story 3' at media persons at her friend Elli Avram's birthday bash.
Daisy had earlier played Salman Khan's love interest in her debut 'Jai Ho', a role of a sweet and nice girl. About her character in 'Hate Story 3', she said: "I won't be able to reveal much, but all I can say is that this character is completely different to the character I played in 'Jai Ho'."
Daisy said that the film will release by the end of the year. 'Hate Story 3' also stars Sharman Joshi, Karan Singh Grover as male leads while Zarine Khan and Daisy will be raising the temperatures with their hotness.
The film is being directed by Vishal Pandya and is written by Vikram Bhatt, releasing under the banner of Bhushan Kumar's T-Series.
Both the previous parts were successful and were popular for the erotic scenes against the backdrop of a revenge story.

When Javed Akhtar felt like hiding in a small town!

Javed Akhtar, who has to his credit four National Awards for best lyrics besides accolades for film scripts and poems, once considered running away to a small city and living with a pseudonym because he felt he could not write anymore.
Javed Akhtar
Javed Akhtar
The constant pressure of delivering lyrics and scripts within the deadline and at a time when he was stuck with a "writer's block" made the veteran wordsmith feel like escaping to Sangli district in Maharashtra, a place he never visited.
"It has so often happened with me that whenever I would write a script, a producer would come and give me a heavy signing amount. And then when I sat to write I felt I could not even write a single page," Akhtar said.
The filmwriter and poet was here recently to release the book "In Other Words", a translation of his own poetic works in English by Ali Hussain Mir.
During that time there was no television, so nobody recognised me by face and all they identified with was my name. I used to fantasize when I was unable to write, that there was only one way out and that is to run away to some small town and start living there under some other name and start doing something else," he said.
"... And I don't know why every time I used to think of escaping, I thought of going to Sangli, a city that I have never been to. And maybe another reason was that I never came across anybody from Sangli so I thought I can hide there, it will be a safe place," quipped Akhtar.
Famous now for umpteen lyrics in films Akthar had landed in Mumbai in early 60s after a rebelling with father Jan Nisar Akhtar, an eminent poet of Urdu literary world.
Interacting with the audience on the question of how to tackle writer's block , he said, "there is not hard and fast rule for the process of creativity. Within one person there is no permanence reason for logical initiative that makes a person write. As far as writer's block, everyone faces that."
"But, if you are a professional writer, you can't only wait for inspiration, you just have to write. You have to give it on a particular date. When writing script or lyrics for a film, you can't say that I am not getting inspired ...it's not possible, so you better get inspired!," he said.
The noted lyricist poet had in the year 2013 been conferred with Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu, for his poetry collection "Lava."
"Often, people ask me that the songs you write, what is your source of inspiration for it. And I say - deadline! I saw a deadline coming! It doesn't remain a choice anymore and you have to get all your faculties together to write," Akhtar, who won eight Filmfare best lyrics awards, said.

Bihar govt declares 'Manjhi - The Mountain Man' movie tax-free

The Bihar government today announced that no entertainment tax would be taken for the exhibition of the Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer movie "Manjhi - The Mountain Man" in theatres across the state.
'Manjhi - The Mountain Man'
'Manjhi - The Mountain Man'
Cabinet Coordination Department Principal Secretary Shishir Kumar Sinha said the decision was taken at the meeting of state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, which observed that the movie was based on the inspiring life of Dashrath Manjhi popularly known as "Mountain Man".
"The cabinet said the movie is based on the life of real hero Manjhi, whose inspirational story tells that a person can do the biggest work with determination even when resources are scarce. It encourages the viewers to see human life in the right perspective and inspires them, as well as, the society," Sinha added.
The Siddiqui-starrer movie, directed by Ketan Mehta, is a biopic on Manjhi, a resident of Gehlaur village in Atri block of Gaya district of Bihar. It was released on July 17.
Manjhi was a poor labourer born in 1934 to a landless family of 'mahadalit' Musahars - the lowest of the low in Bihar's highly caste-ridden society.
His village was cut off from the rest of the world by a massive solid rock mountain and remained devoid of power, medical facilities, as well as, other amenities. People used to curse the remoteness of the village, but did nothing.
The poor landless labourer, who used to work on landlord's farms, was spurred to action when his wife Falguni Devi died in 1959 as she could not be taken to hospital in time.
For the next 22 years, Manjhi worked on the mountain with just a hammer and chisel in memory of his wife. People called him a lunatic, but he persevered and finally carved out a 360 feet long and 30 feet wide passage through it.
The feat shortened the travel distance between Atri and neighbouring Wazirganj blocks from 55 km to 15 km, opening up the village to the world.
Manjhi died in 2007 and was accorded a state funeral.
The Bihar chief minister proposed a 3-km metalled road leading to his village and a hospital named after him.
The determined labourer's story fascinated actor Aamir Khan and he traveled to Bihar and went to Manjhi's village. He met his (Manjhi's) son Bhagirath Manjhi and daughter-in-law Basanti Devi there.
Khan also dedicated the first episode of season 2 of TV show Satyamev Jayate in 2014 to Manjhi.

These Bollywood actors reunited on-screen after a hiatus

As Ajay Devgn and Tabu share screen space in 'Drishyam' after over a decade and half, we turn the spotlight on other actors who reunited on the big screen after a gap of several years...
While fresh or unusual casting creates a lot of buzz and curiosity, reunion of actors are equally looked forward to, especially if it comes after a long interlude. As 'Drishyam' hits the silver screen today, movie buffs will get to see Ajay Devgn and Tabu sharing screen space after 16 years — they were last seen together in 'Thakshak' (1999). This film, however, will have sparks flying between the duo as Tabu plays a cop and Ajay, a common man, who inadvertently lands in a precarious situation and tries hard to outdo her.

Speaking about their reunion, the actress has admitted that she didn't have to think twice before giving her nod to the project as she believes Ajay is her "trump card". On the other hand, Ajay reportedly said: "Working with Tabu in 'Drishyam' was no different from working with her in the '90s. We are childhood friends, our real life equation helps us work in perfect tandem. Since we have been busy with our respective work, there wasn't much interaction before the film took off. But we started from where we had left off. That's the strength of every friendship."

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol

The last time: 'My Name Is Khan' (2010)
After the break: 'Dilwale' (upcoming)
Lowdown: The on-screen power couple of the '90s have teamed up for the Rohit Shetty film, which is currently being shot in Bulgaria. The pair has delivered several blockbusters like 'Baazigar', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Karan Arjun', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'. It is said that Rohit got close buddy Ajay Devgn to cajole wife Kajol to do the film. And with SRK already on board, the actress apparently didn't need much motivation to say yes, although there were reports that she demanded Rs 5 crore to sign on the dotted line. With this pairing, Dilwale is arguably the most anticipated film of 2016.
Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia
Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia

The last time: 'Leela' (2002)
After the break: 'Dabangg' (2010)
Lowdown: They had co-starred in quite a few films like 'Insaaf' (1987), 'Aakhri Adalat' (1988), 'Batwara' (1989) and 'Khoon Ka Karz' (1991). Almost over a decade later, they united for 'Leela' in which Kapadia played a professor and married to Khanna, a renowned poet. The film, however, failed to work at the box-office. Eight years later, they came together for the Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha-starrer which was a superhit.
Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah
Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah

The last time: 'Black and White' (2008)
After the break: 'Dil Dhadakne Do' (2015)
Lowdown: These two veterans garnered much appreciation as the Mehra couple in the recent Zoya Akhtar ensemble movie. They not only brought a sting to their interactions as expected from a husband and a wife in a loveless marriage, but seemed perfectly cast as the parents of Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. Even though they were working together after a gap of seven years, Shefali felt her co-star hadn't changed at all. "He is as dedicated and committed as he was before," she had been quoted as saying.
Saif Ali Khan and Preity ZintaSaif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta
The last time: 'Salaam Namaste' (2005)
After the break: 'Happy Ending' (2014)
Lowdown: The dimpled actress did a cameo in the Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK film as one of Saif's many ex-girlfriends. An excited Preity even tweeted pictures of them together on the sets, saying: "Cannot believe That the first time we shot together was 16 years ago ! Unbelievable." The first time that they were paired opposite each other was for 'Kya Kehna' (2000) and the last was 'Salaam Namaste' — call it sheer coincidence, but both the films had Saif impregnating Preity by accident. On their latest collaboration, Saif had said, "She is a dear friend. She was at my wedding with Kareena (Kapoor). She even took me to the hospital once, when I fell off a bike and nearly killed myself! We go way back. I am very happy to have acted with her again. We have a screen history that helps the role and it's very cool of her to do a special part for us in the film."
Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapoor
Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapoor

The last time: 'Finding Fanny' (2014)
After the break: 'Maqbool' (2003)
Lowdown: The two maverick actors, who happen to be brothers-in-law, are apparently wary of being cast together (Naseer's wife Ratna Pathak and Pankaj's wife Supriya Pathak are sisters). They did star in the Vishal Bhardwaj film, but had no scenes together. According to buzz, Naseer and Pankaj had a fallout over a film long time ago and since then, they avoid each other. However, the put the rumours to rest by starring in Homi Adajania's film last year. In fact, Naseer helped Pankaj overcome water phobia during the shoot. The duo has done quite a few films in the past together, which includes 'Mandi', 'Khamosh', 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron', 'Jalwa' and 'Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho'.

Here's why Imran Abbas had to cancel 'Jaanisar' promotional tour

Visa issues forced Pakistani actor Imran Abbas to cancel a film promotional tour in Chandigarh
The team of Muzaffar Ali's 'Jaanisar', which has been travelling to various cities in India for promotions, had to cancel its Chandigarh visit recently. Reason? Pakistani actor Imran Abbas, who stars in the lead, possesses a travel visa that is valid for limited cities.

A source says, "We were in Lucknow when we got to know that Imran won’t be able to travel to Chandigarh as it was not covered under his travel visa. We didn’t want to go ahead without him, so cancelled the visit altogether. Since it was a last-minute decision, the organisers were in a bit of a soup. We couldn’t do much apart from apologising profusely to them."
The actor will also have to miss out on the film's release — August 7 — as his visa expires two days prior to it. However, he intends to complete the promotions in some other cities here before returning to Pakistan.
Imran says, "Before starting the city tours, my visa was sorted for eight cities. However ,when I was in Lucknow, I was informed that my Chandigarh visa had to be cancelled. My emergency application too was not approved because of paperwork and hopefully, I will be able to visit these cities in future."
