What are Madhuri's dream roles?

What are Madhuri's dream roles?

She has done a variety of roles in her over three decades of association with the Hindi filmdom. But the charming and ever-graceful Madhuri Dixit says she has a natural inclination for roles that portray women as a stronger being.

An active spokesperson for women's rights and for girl child's empowerment, Madhuri said she was born in a family with three daughters and one son.

"I grew up in a family of equals," she said at the 'Women of the World' summit here on Friday.

Just as she voices her concerns for women-related issues off screen, she even takes that voice forward through her roles in films. Her comeback roles, 'Gulaab Gang' and 'Dedh Ishqiya' saw her do that.

Madhuri said she has always tried to balance her roles - but she could only choose her characters after she achieved a certain popularity.

"When you begin your career, you have to do what comes your way. You have to prove yourself as people don't know your abilities. Once you reach there, where people are confident about your talent, then you can choose your roles.

"And that's exactly what I have done."

Stressing that since she comes from a family "where women are strong, that's why I gravitate towards roles of women who are stronger".

"I like roles where the woman has a good role to show the varied emotions in a woman's life, whether fiery or understated. I think that's the strength of a woman."

Madhuri also explained that "it was this reason why that for a 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun', I had 'Mrityudand'; for a 'Dil To Pagal Hai', a 'Pukaar'; and for a 'Tezaab', 'Parinda' and 'Prahaar'."

Why Shabana is feeling worried these days?

Why Shabana is feeling worried these days?

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi on Friday expressed support to those raising issues of intolerance in the country. She said "the growing intolerance is worrying" and that the fringe elements need to be "put down".

"The growing intolerance in the country is extremely worrying. The debate currently is not just about putting the fringe elements down, but also about respecting dissent," Azmi said while addressing a session at the Women in the World India Summit.

Shabana, a former member of parliament, stood her ground and said that in a pluralist country like India, "there is bound to be disagreements and dissent must be respected".

"Intolerance will continue, but the question remains how the state will deal with this," the actor said.

Many artistes and writers in the country have been raising the issue of growing intolerance in the country. This surfaced after a Muslim man in Dadri was killed over rumours of having consumed beef. Many of these writers and artistes have returned their state awards as a show of dissent.

This mass returning of awards has also grabbed international interest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was blamed for being "silent" on the issue, had during his visit to Britain recently responded with "India is not intolerant" when a question was put to him by a foreign journalist.

Responding to the tweet, Madhuri wrote: "@sharmeenochinoy @WomenintheWorld It was a pleasure meeting you too! Wish you luck for the Oscar nomination."

They were both in the capital for the Women in the World summit, founded by internationally known journalist and author Tina Brown.

At the summit, Madhuri spoke about her life as an actress and humanitarian; while Obaid Chinoy was part of the event as moderator of a segment where two inspiring mothers shared stories of how they rose above personal catastrophe and forged a bond of reconciliation and peace.

The Pakistani filmmaker's next chance at an Oscar is courtesy 'A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness', her new documentary that tells the story of an 18-year-old woman who survives an attempted honour killing.

The film is a semi-finalist in the 'Best Documentary - Short Subject' category.

Anil unleashes the 'tapori' act at IFFI inaugural

If there was ever a 'paisa vasool' chief guest, the organiser of International Film Festival of India may have found just the one in veteran actor Anil Kapoor.

Overcoming the sombreness of the occasion and the fact that it was an official function organised by the union ministry for information and broadcasting, Kapoor danced to popular film songs picturised on him.

He also gave a shoutout to Dev Patel, who he acted with in Oscar award-winning film 'Slumdog Millionnaire', while also returning the quips about his age from union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Kapoor, who initially said he was humbled and overcome by emotion, quickly put it all aside by flinging his suit into the audience and dancing extempore to his trademark 'tapori' songs like 'One two ka four' from 'Ram Lakhan' and the racy number 'Dhak Dhak' from 'Beta' along with the ceremony's co-host Aditi Rao Hydari.

From stage, he also gave a 'long time no see' shoutout to Dev Patel, who was seated in the audience.

"I am meeting Dev Patel from 'Slumdog Millionnaire' now since the Oscar night," Kapoor said.

Patel plays Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar in 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' which is the opening film at IFFI.

God Help Them! 'Bajirao Mastani' is in big trouble

God Help Them! 'Bajirao Mastani' is in big trouble

The Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra starrer 'Bajirao Mastani', produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has landed into controversy, with the descendant of Bajirao Peshwa I alleging that historical facts have been "altered" while portraying the late king and his wives Kashibai and Mastani in the film.

In a letter written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday, Bajirao's descendant Prasadrao Peshwe has demanded that the government look into the matter, review the soon-to-be released film, investigate the matter and take a decision accordingly.

Peshwe said he is an ordinary citizen and wrote to the CM after watching the teasers and promos of the upcoming film.

"It has been found out that the said cinema in the name of cinematic liberty has altered original history. So also, a song has been picturised on the wife of Shrimant Bajirao Peshwe I, Kashibai and Mastani. This incident is not keeping in-line with the history," he alleged.

"Moreover, the 'Pinga' dance form is an integral part of Marathi culture and has been transformed into a 'item song' and the costumes and dance direction are on that lines," he further alleged.

Prasadrao said the warrior king Shrimant Bajirao Peshwe and the overall legacy of Peshwas is a matter of Maharashtrian pride.

"The historical personalities are always a matter of respect. The picturisation of the said film, the historical references of the period and story appear to be perverted," he charged.

"As I could not withstand the insult of Maratha history, Marathi ethos and Indian culture, I am making this appeal to you that the Maharashtra government pay attention, review the entire film, and with proper inquiry arrive at a appropriate decision," he said in the letter to Fadnavis.

As per historical records, Bajirao Ballal Bhat, better known as Bajirao Peshwa I, was born on August 18, 1700 and ruled between 1720 to 1740. He died in a battle on April 28, 1740. According to historical records, Bajirao Peshwa I fought 43 wars and remained unconquered.

Another descendant of queen Kashibai Peshwe, who wished not to be named, claimed that Kashibai suffered from an arthritis-like ailment at a very young age and was bed-ridden for most of her life.

"The late queen was highly learned and had her own library. Since the late queen Kashibai suffered from a debilitating disease of the knee joints, she could never have been expected to dance. Moreover, the royal ladies never danced in public," he said.

Big Question: Why Ranbir is avoiding Salman?

Big Question: Why Ranbir is avoiding Salman?

Sources claim that Deepika Padukone will shoot with host Salman Khan sans 'Tamasha' co-star Ranbir Kapoor for the special Sunday episode of 'Bigg Boss 9'

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor have been going around town for the promotions of their next, 'Tamasha'. They have visited the sets of almost every reality and fiction show to endorse the film and it was expected that their next pit stop would be 'Bigg Boss 9'. However, sources claim that Deepika will shoot with show host Salman Khan sans Ranbir for the special Sunday episode.

A source close to the show says, "Ranbir has decided to skip 'Bigg Boss 9' because of Salman. After all, meeting your girlfriend's ex is always awkward."

At Anil Kapoor's Diwali bash recently, when Salman bumped into Ranbir and Katrina, he reportedly ignored the Kapoor scion and spoke only to his ex-flame. "Now, Ranbir clearly doesn't wish to make things any more awkward by going to the reality show sets and sharing screen space with Salman," adds another source.

As far as Deepika is concerned, she will shoot for the special episode in Lonavla today. After she is escorted into the 'Bigg Boss 9' house, contestants will try to woo her.

The channel's spokesperson remained unavailable for comment.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed magnum opus, a period film revolving around 18th century warrior Peshwa Bajirao's romance, is set to release on December 18. It stars Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.

Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and 'Bajirao Mastani' director Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly got emotional and teary-eyed at the film's trailer launch, which was held recently in Mumbai.

"I am overwhelmed...its not a movie it's an experience. I might breakdown. It's an amazing feeling. We have given our sweat, blood, tears, passion...lot of hard work," Deepika said at the trailer launch here tonight.

"While we were doing `Ram Leela,' we felt it is a big film. It was so difficult. `Ram Leela' was a rehearsal....prep (preparation) for us," she said, referring to the 2013 film, also directed by Bhansali, that featured her and Ranveer.

Bhansali came on the stage and hugged the 29-year-old actress and the two looked emotional.

"I am in a confused state ...it's an emotional moment. It's a film made out of passion...lot of talented people are part of it. There is a feeling of emptiness, sadness ...as for 12 years we were working on it," Bhansali said.

Priyanka, another leading lady of the film who is currently abroad, made her presence felt at the event through video conference.

"I am not there....I am missing being there. It's a story that needed to be told. I am thankful to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for giving me this opportunity. It is love story of Bajirao and Mastani and I am happy I got to be an instrument in it," said Priyanka with tears in her eyes.

Dev Patel proud of Ramanujan legacy, but scared of maths

Panaji: He may have played a young Ramanujan, India's greatest mathematician, but for 25-year-old Dev Patel, mathematics as a subject in the school curriculum has always been a scourge.
Dev Patel
Dev Patel
But maths or no maths, the British-born Patel, a native of the western Indian state of Gujarat, believes that by playing the genius Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar, the 19th century Indian wizard of numbers, in Matt Brown's "The Man Who Knew Infinity", the actor is fulfilling an almost sacred obligation of bringing the legacy of an Indian hero back to his homeland.
Patel, who is in Goa to attend the inaugural ceremony of the 46th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which opens with his film, spoke to a select audience about his role as Ramanujan, his fear of being typecast as the 'Asian guy', how Hollywood is evolving and, of course, his dread for mathematics.
"As a matter of fact, I was terrible at mathematics. It was worse because my father is an accountant. Hey, thus is life. I am playing one of the greats (Ramanujan). I think there is a lot of acting that was involved," the strapping six-foot-two-inch tall actor said.
Patel leads the star cast which has the masterly Jeremy Irons, an Academy award winner, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, Devika Bhise among others.
The film, which largely tracks down the life of Ramanujan in Cambridge and his passage to Britain and back to India after his stint at Trinity, according to Patel, is a priceless homage to one of India's greatest geniuses.
"I think it was a very important agenda for us, to always bring this story back to India. My heritage as you know, I was from Gujarat. I feel great responsibility to bring back the great Indian icon back and I am lucky enough to be able to do so," Patel said.
Asked if he felt typecast into playing 'typically' Asian roles in the West, the actor said that while his motto was to convert adversity into opportunity, he also believed that Hollywood was in the process of evolving.
"I don't mind being sort of ambassador to my culture. That being said, does it require that much hard work to get my foot in the door? Yes. Do people scrutinise the decisions I make more? Yes, One of my mottos is to see an obstacle as an opportunity. So people use the word typecast very loosely and like I said earlier on, I've turned what people see as a negative as something positive," he said.
"Hollywood's becoming more and more diverse, I am very lucky that I rode the wave of this incredible film 'Slumdog (Millionaire)', which was my first project and that kind of opened a lot of doors for a lot of actors including myself. The film was bigger than anyone that was in it really," he said.
