Bollywood sweeps National Awards

There were no big surprises as the 63rd National Awards were announced yesterday. hitlist speaks to some of the winners
Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut
I was on my way to my Nani's house in Manali since she is not well, that I started getting these messages from friends. I didn't even know the announcements were going to be made today (Monday). My mother stared crying when she heard the news. I am glad that I am with my family when the news of such an honour came my way. It is a validation for someone like me, because it totally depends on merit. It is a very genuine gesture.
I was absolutely thrilled when I heard the news and (laughs) violins started playing in the background. When I got the award way back in 2008 for Fashion, I had some 10 people messaging me. But this time, there were so many messages; I guess women especially relate to my journey as I am this quintessential underdog who managed to get some acknowledgement
Varun Grover

Writer-lyricist of 'Masaan' who won the Best Lyricist award for 'Moh Moh Ke Dhaage' from 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha'
Varun Grover
I didn't know that the announcements were being made today (Monday). The anticipation was always there since Masaan was so spoken about, but when it really came, it was a joyous moment. This award is also totally uncompromised; you don't have to stand in front of a branded billboard to get it. Also, the good thing is it has come for a song not approved by traditional marketing logic. People didn't want it to be part of the trailer, thinking that it will put people off. But to think that it got its own popularity and people kept it alive throughout is in itself a great thing
Kabir Khan

Director of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' which was named Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment
Kabir Khan
Popular awards have more or less become like TV shows. In fact, there are so many of them that their significance is reduced. At such a time, it is a matter of pride to bag a National Award. You get it only on merit and nothing else. This is my second National Award after 'Kabul Express' (2006). 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' is a special film for me and the credit goes to the entire team. Just the fact that a film with such kind of a subject was accepted in itself shows that people believe in brotherhood. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been so unanimously accepted
Neeraj Ghaywan

Who won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film Of A Director for 'Masaan'
Neeraj Ghaywan
I am grateful to all those people who have supported this film. 'Masaan' started getting acknowledgement since the prestigious Cannes festival last year. And back in India, it was the Jagran Film Festival which first recognised it and gave it a few awards. Then it went on to win a few popular awards, and now the National Award. I am happy for myself and the team that's associated with the film. I am feeling very proud but I want to continue to stay rooted to the ground

'My whole life came back to me'

National Award winning director Nila Madhab Panda on Padma Shri win
I did not aspire for a big house or other such stuff; I wanted to be known by my work, National Award-winner Nila Madhab Panda told hitlist soon after receiving the Padma Shri on Monday. Describing the felicitation ceremony as a surreal moment, the 42-year-old Odisha-born filmmaker said he was filled with pride when President Pranab Mukherjee asked him to "keep up the good work".
Nila Madhab Panda

Nila Madhab Panda
"As soon as I entered Rashtrapati Bhavan, seeing the President and the Prime Minister and other bigwigs, it was a surreal moment for me. I had never imagined myself here. My whole life came back to me. I went into flashback. I always wanted my work to give me identity. This honour also comes with a huge responsibility," said Panda, who won the National Award for 'I Am Kalam' (2010).
At the event, he met poet and writer Haldhar Nag who also hails from his home state. "He comes from a humble background and always wears a vest and banian, and walks barefoot — that's how he attended the ceremony too. It is so fulfilling to see such people bag awards," he added.
So, what are his plans to celebrate the joyous occasion? "I plan to celebrate this day with a few friends at a restaurant in New Delhi. I am not into fashion, but made it a point to wear a bandhgala to the event," he said.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks ravishing in red in this new still from 'Sarbjit'

Makers of 'Sarbjit' have unveiled a new still from a song featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the former Miss World looks breathtakingly beautiful!
As soon as the photo was posted on Twitter, #Sarbjit started trending on the micro-blogging website.
Aishwarya plays the role of Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur, while Randeep will be seen in the titular role.
'Sarbjit' has been shot in various cities of Punjab including Amritsar, Malerkotla and Patiala.
Sarabjit Singh died after a brutal attack by jail inmates in a Pakistani jail in 2013. He was convicted of terrorism and spying by a Pakistani court and sentenced to death in 1991 but the government had stayed his execution for an indefinite period in 2008. His sister and family started a campaign for his release saying he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.
The film also stars Richa Chadha and Darshan Kumaar in pivotal roles.
'Sarbjit' is slated to release on May 20.

Did Tigmanshu Dhulia finally find a producer for 'Milan Talkies'?

Tigmanshu Dhulia is said to have finally found a producer for his jinxed project, 'Milan Talkies'
Last November, hitlist had reported about Ekta Kapoor abandoning her long-proposed project, 'Milan Talkies', and leaving director Tigmanshu Dhulia on the tenterhooks . However, we now hear that the "jinxed" project is back on track with a four-month intense hunt for financial backing coming to an end.

Says a source, "More than actors turning down 'Milan Talkies', Ekta washing her hands of it was a major setback for Tigmanshu. But he did not lose hope and has finally found a producer. The film will go on floors by the end of this year."
Supposed to roll in September 2013, the film kept running into one hurdle after another — casting issues and unavailability of actors who were approached in the last three years. Apparently tired of the repeated delay, Ekta decided to shelve it for good. However, Tigmanshu, who had replaced Milan Luthria at the helm, was determined to make the film.
Tigmanshu remained unavailable for comment, but a source close to him says, "The film's script has been reworked and it will be made with newcomers. At the moment, Tigmanshu is busy with Yaara and once it releases, he will take up 'Milan Talkies'."

Sonam Kapoor hints at doing another woman centric film

After winning accolades for her last release "Neerja", actress Sonam Kapoor hinted at working once again in a woman centric film.
In Ram Madhvani's biopic, Sonam essayed the life of slain flight attendant Neerja Bhanot who died saving hundreds of passengers on a hijacked flight in 1986.

When asked if audiences are once again going to see her reprising a strong female character on screen, Sonam said, "I will announce something soon. I can't talk about it." She did not divulge any further details of her next project.
The "Raanjhana" actress, when quizzed if she would also like to play historic female heroes, she said, "You see it. Hopefully I would like to play something like that." Sonam was talking on the sidelines of event 'Women of Worth Awards'.
The 30-year-old actress on the occasion acknowledged the active role of many Indian women who helped build the nation but rued that unsung heroes like Neerja Bhanot got lost in history.
"There are lot of Indian woman who have been modern heroes who have helped in building a better India. There are lot of Indian women in the history you look at like Mother Teresa, Sarojini Naidu, Lata Mangeshkar and others," she said.
"There are women who got lost in the page of history like Neerja Bhanot and it is sad. There is a wider variety of women that we are looking at and the more innovative things that they are doing which are cultural and scientific breakthroughs and artistic as well," Sonam said.
L'Oreal Paris in association with a news channel hosted the fifth edition of the award last evening to felicitate the achievements of eight exceptional women who have made a difference to the lives of others.
Ambassadors for the beauty major Sonam, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Katrina Kaif were present to give away the awards.

"If not full-fledged roles, maybe cameo appearances," Masaba told PTI when asked if she would like to act in movies. Masaba said she is not involved in her husband's work.
"It's (producing films) a thankless and stressful business and I have enough stress of my own," she quips. Daughter of legendary West Indian cricketer Viv Richards and actress Neena Gupta, Masaba is all geared up to present her collection at the upcoming season of Lakme Fashion Week here from March 29 to April 3.
She says the inspiration for her collection is old Indian aesthetics and culture.
"We have modernised the contemporary Indian 'ikat' patterns and used Indian elements like the chhap tilak, sliced garlic and chillies," she said.
The collection will consist of frill concept saree, voluminous baggy pants, Angrakhas with layered jackets. The colour story for the collection would be red, soft pink, canary yellow and baby blue.
"It is a very vibrant collection with digital and pigment prints, while the fabrics used are mainly cotton poplin, crepe and light silks," Masaba said.
A Bollywood celebrity would be walking down the ramp for Masaba but the designer did not revealed the name. She has tied up with fitness tracker maker Fitbit as partners for the fashion week.
"We will be showcasing the new Fitbit Blaze and Fitbit Alta in interesting ways through presentation. We believe in fitness and believe that FIT is always in Fashion," she said.

Asked if such behaviour affects her, Sonakshi told IANS here: "No, it (trolling and criticism on social media) doesn't affect me mentally. So I don't need to overcome it."

Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan wish 'Ray' a happy birthday

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan and his ex wife Sussanne Khan took to social media to wish their son Hrehaan, whom they lovingly call 'Ray', on his 10th birthday.
Hrithik shared a photo of the Roshan family and captioned it, "May we all leave this world a slightly better place for our children. Happy birthday Ray. And thank you all for the love n wishes."
Sussanne, too, took to Instagram to share pictures with her children.

Sussanne is the daughter of veteran actor Sanjay Khan and his wife Zarine Khan. Her wedding to Hrithik was considered what fairytales are made of. They dated for four years before tying the knot in 2000, following the success of the actor's debut film "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai". They called it quits in December 2013, just a few days before their 13th marriage anniversary.
Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan has been embroiled in a controversy involving his alleged ex Kangana Ranaut with the two slapping legal notices on each other.

On the silver screen, Hrithik will be next seen in 'Mohenjo Daro" directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Box office: 'Batman v Superman' scores over 'Rocky Handsome'

Cricket fervour and poor word-of-mouth work against 'Rocky Handsome' while cine buffs make a beeline for 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'
The long weekend promised an adrenaline-fuelled thrill-ride to moviegoers with two action films hitting theatres — John Abraham-starrer 'Rocky Handsome' and Warner Bros' 'Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice'. By the end of four days, the Hollywood flick beat the Hindi release by a mile.

"'Rocky Handsome' took a promising start with the paid previews on Thursday. However, on Friday, the collections were just average since the word-of-mouth wasn't good and the critics had panned it. The numbers took a nosedive over the weekend, especially on Sunday courtesy the India-Australia T20 match," says trade analyst Amod Mehra.
'Batman v Superman' , which released on over 1350 screens across India, weighed heavily on its prospects, adds Mehra. With approximately Rs 18 crore in four days, the superhero flick comfortably surpassed the collections of the John-starrer.

Trade guru Taran Adarsh says, "Despite being a solo Hindi release, 'Rocky Handsome' did not do as well as expected and failed to benefit from the holiday weekend."
On the other hand, the successful run of 'Kapoor & Sons' continued in its second weekend. Adarsh says the Karan Johar production maintained "excellent hold" at the box office despite three challenges — new releases, World T20 matches and exams.
"In fact, it has also proved to be 2016's highest week one grosser overseas so far with Rs 28 crore. By the end of the second weekend, it has minted Rs 35.65 crore," he avers.

Siddharth Mallya hangs out with Katrina Kaif's sister Isabelle

Siddharth Mallya, son of beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya, recently met Katrina Kaif's sister Isabelle.
Siddharth took to Instagram to share a snap of the two and captioned it, "Great catching up with this one after ages!!!! @isakaif #vain."

Salman Khan's production 'Dr Cabbie', featuring Isabelle, though complete in 2014, did not get a theatrical release in India despite Salman's plans. It was touted to be a launchpad for Isabelle's film career in Bollywood.
In 2011-12, Isabelle would often accompany Kat to film events and award shows, but later, she went missing from her sister's side. Isabelle and Harshvardhan (Anil Kapoor's son) also featured in a short film, 'Coming Home' (2012).
In 2014, Isabelle was allegedly involved in a sex tape scandal. However, many claimed it was not her, but her lookalike.
Meanwhile, Siddharth Mallya's debut film, 'Brahman Naman', not just premiered, but also competed in the World Cinema dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States last year.
