Mandira Bedi: Daily soaps are like a factory

Actress-designer Mandira Bedi is still loved by many for essaying a strong-willed woman in the 1990s popular TV drama "Shanti - Ek Aurat Ki Kahani". But she says she doesn't see herself acting in a daily soap again as it is like a factory.

The actress, who featured in the hit finite series "24" last year and also participated in the reality show "I Can Do That", hasn't completely turned away from the small screen. Will we see her in daily soaps again?
"I don't see myself acting in a daily soap because that is like a factory. You need to give 25 days in a month which I do not have. With my store, saris and events that I do... if I do something, it will be finite," Mandira told IANS at the Van Heusen GQ Fashion Nights 2015 here earlier this month.
What about movies?
"There is nothing at the moment because people don't know what to do with me in a movie. I get offered an item number one day and bhabhi's (sister-in-law) role the other day, and then somebody's sister the next day. So people don't really know what to do with me," said the 43-year-old, who is the face of 92.7 BG FM's "Dabur Honitus BIG Junior RJ Season 3".
The audience will have to wait to see her on the big screen as the "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" actress says she won't don the greasepaint unless she gets "a role that excites" her and one that she wants to give her time to.
"I have a four-year-old son too. I can play a bhabhi, mother or daughter, but a role that matters. I want a pivotal role even if that means that I have five scenes in a film."
As for the fashion world, she has big plans. Mandira, who ventured into fashion designing in 2013, hopes to move beyond saris some day. Any plans of creating a line for men?
"I love saris. I also need to move to the other women silhouettes before I do men's wear. I never say never for anything. I would love to be a designer that goes 360 degree... that covers women's wear, Indian and western, and men's wear, but eventually," she said.
"Currently, I am doing saris. I would like to venture into spaces that I am comfortable wearing... like gowns. May be that will be the next step. I do wear crop tops with skirts too. What I will venture into next, only time will tell," added the artiste, who has also tried her hand at anchoring.
The untrained designer believes in knowing how a certain garment falls on her body, before she creates them.
"I wear jeans, T-shirts, saris and evening wear like dresses and gowns. I don't wear too many anarkalis. I need to know them, I need to wear them. That's how I got into saris in the first place. I am not a trained designer; so I need to know how they fall on my body before I go into designing them," she said.
"I aim to do one fashion week every year. Hopefully, Lakme Fashion Week. I would like to do a fashion week in Delhi too," she signed off.

JJ Abrams wants to see Ava DuVernay direct a 'Star Wars' film

Los Angeles: JJ Abrams is confident that Ava DuVernay would do a great job in directing one of the films from the cult "Star Wars" franchise.
When asked about potential female writers and directors he would like to see working on the Star Wars, Abrams told Nerdist, "To me, the knee-jerk reaction if I had to (name someone) is Ava DuVernay, who I think would just kill it."
"She is as much a fan of genre movies ... and hearing her talk about, not just Star Wars, but hearing her talk about those kinds of films is evidence that she would just kill it.
"When you look at her work in Selma, which was as well told, sophisticated and humane as I think has come out in the last decade, I mean, she is just  if she can do that story that well, there's no question she'd kill (a Star Wars) movie."
The "Selma" director later took to Twitter to share a video of Abrams' comments, captioning it, "The force is strong with this one. xo"
Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is releasing on December 25.

'Everly' - Movie Review

'Everly'A; Action-thrillerDirector: Joe LynchCast: Salma Hayek Pinault, Jennifer Blanc, Gabriella Wright, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Togo Igawa, Laura CepedaRating:
This film, top-lining A-lister Salma Hayek, finds release in India a little too late in the day. The subject matter and the sheer din of unceasing violence may have been the determinant for that delay.
Everly (Hayek) is a call girl who turns approver against her gangster Boss Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe) - who in turn puts a hit on her and her family. Everly, therefore, has no option but to match wits and firepower against a ruthless opponent who will leave no stone unturned in his quest for vengeance.
Watch the trailer of 'Everly'

Joe Lynch helms this action-thriller in a mixed blend of styles that quite obviously takes inspiration from a wide spectrum of genre films including Japanese horror, '60s grindhouse, Manga-influenced western actioners as well as video-game blood fests.
While it all looks stylish, there's not much consistency or attachment to be had in the telling. Despite the furious pace, there's not much of an adrenaline rush to be had and that's mainly because of the incongruity in styles and looming purposelessness of the mayhem embarked upon here.
Hayek is sincere and gives it her all but believability still turns up suspect. The lack of complexity and depth is what hurts much more than the ritualistic violence and stylised mayhem on display here.

'The Peanuts Movie' - Review

'The Peanuts Movie'. Pic/Santa Banta
Resurrecting the decades old and not-so-familiar (in the Indian sub-continent) 1950-originated Charles M Schulz creation after a long hiatus doesn't appear to be a sound proposition even if its aim is merely to rekindle affection for an age-old brand and possibly green-light further franchise off-shoots.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved "Peanuts" gang had a grand run in the TV circuits and this big screen debut in 3D animation merely marks it as an opportunistic jump. There's no new story to tell here -just a rehash of the old plot points, ideas, images and dialogues from previous projects. But the underdog story central to the telling is what holds your attention. No matter how many times he fails - whether knotted up in kite string, knocked on his butt or any other grave humiliation in front of his classmates - the resilient Charlie Brown gets back up, dusts himself off and stays on track for the perceived goal. His mates might refer to him as a Blockhead but Charlie Brown is a Trier who keeps on improving to surprise himself and everyone else who never gave him a chance.
On the parallel side, his best pal Snoopy, the world's most lovable beagle (a flying ace), is on a mission pursuit of his arch-nemesis The Red Baron. Both friends have goals to accomplish and how they do it is the key here.
The narrative plays out as sincere, lovable and cute - all the qualities that attract children to a product, but the plotting is a little too derivative and quite puzzling too. For the young viewers unfamiliar with the Snoopy and Charlie Brown adventures, there'll be some glaring questions hampering their enjoyment. Questions as to why the dog tries to snatch the blanket from the kid, why the girl acts strangely around the piano-playing boy and why another girl is being called 'Sir' are puzzling if you haven't been brought up on the legend. Even Snoopy's aerial battles with the Red Baron need explanation which is not forthcoming in the movie.
The voicing is all done by child artistes and that's a plus for greater attachment. The colour palette stays largely true to Schulz's printed vision and Vince Guraldi's iconic music finds voice in the new background compositions. Missing character summaries and lack of back stories hamper the enjoyment of this flip through of a 50-year-old antiquated Charlie Brown universe. While the computer animation renders faithfully, the 3D seems pointless. And familiarity alone does not generate enough excitement for this so-called fresh run at the cinemas.

Salman Khan does not like girls doing bold roles: Zareen Khan

She may have featured with Salman Khan in the song 'Character Dheela' but actress Zarine Khan says the superstar does not like when girls do bold roles on screen.

Zareen, who was recently seen in a bold avatar for her latest erotic-thriller 'Hate Story 3', said she is yet to ask the 'Dabangg' star if he has seen the film as she is intimidated by him.
"I have no idea if he has seen the movie. I have been busy with the promotions and he was busy too. Honestly, I didn't even ask him if he has seen the film because I am a little intimidated by him. He does not like girls doing these roles so...," Zareen said.
The 28-year-old actress is not worried about being stereotyped in bold roles as she said, despite starring in an adult film, she has been offered a 'comedy and a women centric' movie.
"Getting stereotyped is an actor's choice. 'Hate Story 3' was not only an erotica but also had a very strong storyline to back it up. It wasn't just bold. So there is no question of being stereotyped, as I have been offered a comedy film, a women centric film too."
The actress is elated with the response to the movie and says she would love to feature in the next part of the 'Hate Story' franchise.
"I would love to be a part of the franchise. But they usually do not repeat their actors. But yes, if I get another chance, I would love to do it."

Before gaining recognition with Salman Khan-starrer 'Jai Ho' in 2014, Daisy earlier worked as an assistant to Acharya in films like 'Zameen' and 'Khakee'.
Asked what she liked the most - acting or dancing? Daisy, who shook a leg with Salman in a song for the 2003 film 'Tere Naam', said, "The reason I am an actress today is because when it comes to conceiving steps I can't do it ... I can't put in my brains when it comes to choreography. Dancing for me, is a stress buster."
Daisy, who was seen playing a bold character in Vishal Pandya's directorial 'Hate Story 3', said that she tried to do something 'different' and 'challenging'.
"It is my second movie and I've tried to do something different and quite challenging...If the actor doesn't trust his director, there is no way the work will come out good. But I trusted my director and he's done a fantastic job," she said.

Mandy Moore wants Ryan Adams to pay $37,000 a month

Mandy Moore wants Ryan Adams to pay $37,000 a month

Singers Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams, who announced their divorce in earlier this year, have not reached any settlement yet.

Court documents state that the former couple cannot decide what to do with their eight pets and how to handle their money, reports aceshowbiz.com.

According to the documents, Moore apparently earns only less than a quarter of Adams' monthly earning, which is $151,000.

Moore shared in the papers that Adams paid half of their mortgage, property taxes and insurance on their home here, but her earnings cannot cover all the expenses.

"I feel as if I have no alternative," Moore wrote in her petition.

She also requested help in taking care of the couple's dogs and cats. She claimed Adams offered to take two of the cats but did not.

"Although I love our pets, it is overwhelming for me to take care of eight of them all of the time," Moore wrote.

She now wants Adams to pay her $37,000 per month and take four of their pets until they reach an agreement on divorce terms.

"Without Ryan's help caring for the house and our pets, I have not been able to work as much as I would like," she wrote.

Moore and Adams announced their divorce after six years of marriage in January.

"It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways," representatives of the stars said in a statement at that time.

She filed for a divorce from him here, while he was in New York, asking for spousal support, reports aceshowbiz.com.
