Naseeruddin Shah: Om Puri's journey was incredible

Om Puri (1950-2017)

×At Om Puri's chautha ceremony on Monday, Naseeruddin Shah remembered his best friend and shared a few anecdotes from his early days. "Om Puri once invited me to his place in Delhi; it was a railway guard's house. He had cooked egg curry. I asked him to show me where he sleeps. He took me to a corridor facing the station and a stench greeted me. I saw a neat charpoy with a pair of chappals slipped under the bed. The stove on which he had made the anda curry for me was also there. There were a couple of books on exercising apart from Constantin Stanislavski's My Life In Art.

I need not describe this, but wanted you to know Om's journey from the corridors of an old Delhi station to the successful actor we all fantasise about," he said.
Naseer also recalled how Om Puri would impersonate the late actor Amrish Puri over the phone. "In those days, there were only landlines. I would hear Amrish Puri's voice on the other end and be on my best behaviour. Many thought Om was Amrish Puri's son or brother and Govind Nihalini is solely responsible for it [creating that perception]. I envied Om's voice and he envied my English [speaking abilities]."

Tom Alter to play Ruskin Bond in short film

Veteran actor Tom Alter has taken on a role as celebrated author Ruskin Bond in a new short film, its maker Bhargav Saikia has revealed.
Saikia, whose Kashmir-set independent thriller production "Kaafiron Ki Namaaz" and horror short film "Awakenings" was widely acclaimed, is happy to welcome the actor on board for his new project, which narrates one of Bond's short stories. The director-producer did not wish to name which story of the noted author he has picked to translate to the screen.
Talking about roping in Tom Alter for the role, Saikia told IANS that his extensive acting experience in films, theatre and television, and his close friendship with the author, will be an asset to the film.
While Saikia is looking forward to a "fruitful collaboration" with the actor, he is happy that he has Bond's support for the film too.
"I met Ruskin Bond sir in Landour (near Mussoorie) last year and he was very kind to grant me the permission to make a short film on one of his stories," Saikia said and clarified that his film is not a biopic on Ruskin Bond.
Other cast members of the project are yet to be revealed.
India's much-loved author, Ruskin Bond, is 82 and continues to enthral readers with his stories, mostly themed on nature.
Earlier, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj had adapted two of his stories for the film medium. The films made were "The Blue Umbrella" and "7 Khoon Maaf".

×The forthcoming release "Haraamkhor" was made via crowd funding, but what many don't know is that filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra gave a personal grant for its production. It was when Chopra read the film's script that he was convinced to contribute personally for the film.
Producer Guneet Monga of Sikhya Entertainment said in a statement: "We were at the NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) pitch lab where we had to pitch our film. And we won the pitch which was sponsored by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and we got the grant of the money from him, which worked towards the post-production of our film.
"The film was produced through a crowd fund on Facebook. Phantom Films wasn't involved. But when the film was wrapped up, we showed it to Anurag (Kashyap) since he's both Shlok (director Shlok Sharma) and my mentor. He saw the movie and loved it and came on board in the capacity of a producer. The film was produced under Rs 1 crore."
"Haraamkhor" is releasing on Friday, and features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi in key roles of a teacher and student.

After almost 20 years, Shoojit Sircar's dream project, a biopic on Udham Singh, becomes reality

New Delhi: Gestating for nearly two decades, director Shoojit Sircar's dream project, a biopic on revolutionary Udham Singh, is finally set to become a reality.
Shoojit, who produced last year's most impactful film "Pink", says he wanted to make the movie on Udham Singh right after he shifted to Mumbai.
"I have been working on the story for 18-19 years now. When I shifted to Mumbai, this was the first film that I wanted to make but something else would always come up. It is set in pre-Independence era, so it was a little difficult to plan," Shoojit told PTI in an interview.
The director says his visit to Jallianwala Bagh in the '90s triggered the idea about Udham Singh, who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in British India in 1940, to avenge the 1919 massacre.
"In the '90s we had a group in Delhi called Act One which had me, Piyush Mishra and Ashish Vidyarthi. We used to sing songs of national harmony."
"During this time, Punjab was coming out of turmoil. I visited the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh at that time. When I went there and saw what actually happened there, that triggered me emotionally."
Shoojit, who has films like "Yahaan", "Vicky Dina", "Madras Cafe" and "Piku" to his credit, says Udham Singh is a forgotten hero.
"He was one of the prominent faces of the freedom movement but youngsters don't know much about this martyr. He is a forgotten hero. Through my film, I want the youngsters to know him."
Shoojit has already started work on the film but he is mum about casting.
The project on Udham Singh is not the only film that will keep the director busy in 2017 as he is collaborating with his "Piku" scriptwriter Juhi Chaturvedi for a love story.
"Juhi and I are working again after 'Vicky Donor' and 'Piku'. We share a very good rapport. It is a simple love story. There will be issues around it. We are currently working on it. We are producing with Ronnie Lahiri. I will direct both the films."
He is also one the producers of "Runningshaadi.com" and Shoojit says he is happy for the film, which has been directed by Amit Roy and stars Amit Sadh and Taapsee Pannu.
Talking about "Pink", which has been hailed as one of the strongest movies to come out of Bollywood on the issues that modern women face, Shoojit says they were careful in keeping the story's integrity intact.
"When you make a film like 'Pink', you are working on the edge. We were very careful about the integrity of the issue.
With 'Pink', we tried to address all the issues that women face. We decided to open up completely so that there is no debate left.
"Similarly, 'Vicky Donor' could have easily been slapstick but I knew that the topic we were dealing with was serious. So, we walked a thin line."

When 'Haraamkhor' director Shlok Sharma was jailed during shoot of 'Gangs of Wasseypur'

'Haraamkhor'
×Director Shlok Sharma had a run-in with the legal authorities when he went to jail during the shoot of 'Gangs of Wasseypur'.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who helmed the two-part crime-saga, revealed that Shlok is so passionate about his work that while he was the second unit director in "...Wasseypur", he had to go to jail twice.
"I have seen his journey, not only as a filmmaker but as a person. Earlier he used to ask before doing everything, then started to decide on his own, when he became the second unit director he started to shoot those things which were not even on the list," he said.
"In '...Wasseypur', he went to jail twice. He wanted to shoot such shots of tracks that he placed cameras on the bridge. He then went to jail for that and if they had a camera there, he would have shot there as well," Kashyap said. The filmmaker was speaking at a special screening of the film at the Jio MAMI Film Club with Star, last night.
Several Bollywood celebrities came to watch the film, including Kalki Koechlin, Vicky Kaushal, and the lead actress Shweta Tripathi.
Kashyap, who is the co-producer of the film, said he was extremely happy with "Haraamkhor" and had seen both, the first edit as well as the final version of the movie.
When asked if he is proud of his former assistant, Kashyap said, "People give me a lot of unnecessary and undue credit. I only choose people. I didn't even know what the script was. I choose people and then they work with full freedom."
"Haraamkhor" chronicles the relationship between a 14-year-old girl, played by Shweta, and her teacher, enacted by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film was presented the Silver Gateway of India trophy at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

Here is the list of JIO Filmfare Short Films Awards 2017

Here is the list of JIO Filmfare Short Films Awards 2017

The immensely well-received JIO Filmfare Short Films Awards 2017, announced the winners through a Facebook live session. After shortlisting 44 films from over a thousand entries, the best ones will finally get to take the coveted black lady home on the night of the prestigious 62nd JIO Filmfare Awards.

The first of its kind short film awards property was entirely organised on the digital platform and was supported by many from the film fraternity. The best names in the industry, including Karan Johar, Gauri Shinde, Anand Rai, Meghna Gulzar, Vidya Balan, Zoya Akhtar and Kabir Khan were on board as prestigious members of the jury.

Editor of Filmfare, Jitesh Pillai and jury member Kabir Khan unveiled the winners through a Facebook Live announcement yesterday, a first ever for any awards property. The winners who bagged the first JIO Filmfare Short Films Awards 2017 are Jyoti Kapur Das for a gripping short film, 'Chutney' which won two awards under the category of Best Film (Fiction) and Best Actress (Tisca Chopra) respectively. Manoj Bajpai won the 'Best Actor' for his character as a constable in 'Taandav'. Prantik Vivek Deshmukh's Marathi short film 'Matitali Kusti' rightfully won the award for Best Film (Non-Fiction). The People's Choice Award for Best Film, based on public voting through social media, was awarded to 'Khamakha' directed by Aarti S Ba, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Manjari Fadnis.

On announcing the winners, director and jury member Kabir Khan said, "Short films is a director's medium. Given the duration, it is very rare for an actor to display all your skills and craft on screen for such a small duration. That is why it's a great platform for upcoming directors. Through short films, we are able to address many more issues which because of certain restrictions are not possible on the big screen. They don't have a box office to worry about and that's something I would like to encourage.`

`Filmfare was the first and the only award we ever knew of, growing up. To be able to walk the classic Filmfare 'Red Carpet' is a dream this hard-core brought-up-on-Hindi-films kid had. It's overwhelming that my dream is coming true! Chutney is a film made without any agendas. I didn't expect it to go so viral or to win awards; I just wanted to tell a story engagingly. It's awesome of the jury and of Filmfare to have rewarded that! When the tweets about the awards came out, I couldn't stop jumping and I know I will still be jumping when I go up to receive that very special Black Lady on January 14th!` said Jyoti Kapur Das on winning Best Film (Fiction) for Chutney.

"It's actually an honour for immensely gifted director Devashish Makhija and muvizz.com. I am so happy that Filmfare thought of recognising the value of short films as a creative platform to showcase one's potential." said Manoj Bajpayee on winning 'Best Actor' for Taandav.

`Filmfare is big, huge, in fact. It's synonymous with the history of Indian cinema. There are many fabulous performances over the years have been highlighted and given longer life by this most prestigious of awards. But what makes this extra special is that I am winning my first Filmfare for 'Chutney' which produced and co-wrote. And winning for a character that is the opposite of 'heroine material' is what shows me that Filmfare is really looking at the art of acting in a bold and modern way. Introducing the category of short films this year is also a crisp new move. It's heartening to see that films that have no godfather or a big studio supporting them are also picked by a firm and fair jury. Thank you for the award Filmfare. This one is for the keeps!` said Tisca Chopra on winning 'Best Actress' for Chutney.

`Winning a Filmfare Award at 24 is a dream come true for an aspiring filmmaker like me. This is beyond my imagination. I hope this film will not only help in reviving traditional mud wrestling but also in reducing the struggles and the pains of the modern day traditional 'Pehelwans' (Wrestlers). It will also help in sustaining the values and culture of our country. I would like to thank Filmfare for honouring me on such a huge platform. I want to graduate to making feature length films some day and the short film format definitely acts as a bridge towards that.` said Prantik Vivek Deshmukh on winning Best Film (Non-Fiction) for Matitali Kusti.

`Khamakha as an idea came to me because of my husband Arun, when he mentioned how you end up judging people during your travels by the way they talk, or their language or their clothes. Everything that is so external. I decided to stress on a Pride and Prejudice on Languages. Short films are the simplest way to discover your own voice. With the revered and extremely loved Filmfare coming out and recognising shorts in such a grand way, it's going to open up a talent flood that will feel extremely liberating!` said, Aarti S. Bagdi on winning People's Choice Award for Best Film - Khamakha.

Nawazuddin a remarkable actor: Shweta Tripathi

Nawazuddin a remarkable actor: Shweta Tripathi

Actress Shweta Tripathi, who will be sharing screen space with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in their forthcoming film "Haraamkhor" said her co-star is a remarkable actor.

"At first, I was worried sharing screen with an actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui because he is a remarkable actor and an outstanding person. He didn't make me feel that I am a newcomer," Shweta said in an interview on Saturday.

"Nawazuddin brings down himself to match the level. I felt like I am working with an actor who has same experience like me," she said

"That's why I respect him so much. I don't know anybody who does that. He gives space to another co-star," She added.

"Working with him brings the best of you. I really admire him. I think he knows how he helped me in acting," the actress said.

"Once he said some actors need to be choosy. That line stuck in my mind. I am now super choosy with the films. He also said 'talent can't be suppressed.' I truly believe in these things," the "Masaan" actress told the reporters.

Shot in a small village in Gujarat, the film explores the romance between a 14-year-old school student and her teacher.

Decorated with visuals set in a small village are the main characters of the film, the teacher, the student, a boy who has a crush on the same girl and his friend who helps him and the teacher's wife.

The trailer is funny in parts -- even as the film sets out to spread a serious message.

Directed by Shlok Sharma, the film is releasing on January 13.

Your performance is what is remembered, says Shraddha Kapoor

Your performance is what is remembered, says Shraddha Kapoor

Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor who is looking forward to her upcoming release "Ok Jaanu" opposite Aditya Roy Kapoor says that the recognition of an actor is not totally dependent on the film's box office fate but their performance.

"You will be remembered for your performance as an actor in people's mind. Many times, the film does not do well at the box office... that is the fate of the film, and we cannot control that, but good work will be appreciated by our audience," Shraddha told the media here alongside her co-actor to a query about the failure of their last release.

Seconding her opinion, Aditya said: "I think our fate changes in every Friday. I have seen both the side of it. In the beginning of my career, three of my films did not do well; then two films ("Aashiqui 2", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani") released in the same year and both worked well. So as an actor we have to hang on, believe in ourselves and keep working with the best of our ability."

Shraddha and Aditya are going through the same phase that happened back in 2013 before the release of their super hit film "Aashiqui 2" with their last releases - "Luv Ka The End" and "Guzaarish" respectively - flopping.

So, will "Ok Jaanu" be the comeback with a success for the on-screen couple?

"Well I think while casting us our director Shaad Ali must have seen something in us that fit us into the role, and it is an advantage that as on-screen pair, the audience loved us, so that can work in our favour," said Aditya.

"As our on-screen pairing was a hit, we got a lot of offers after 'Aashiqui 2', but those were not the right film for us, but we loved the script of 'Ok Jaanu'. So we said yes to the film," added Shraddha.

Directed by Shaad Ali, "Ok Jaanu" will be releasing on January 13.

Live-in relationships not a negative thing, says Aditya Roy Kapoor

Live-in relationships not a negative thing, says Aditya Roy Kapoor

Aditya Roy Kapoor, who will be seen playing the lead role in upcoming "Ok Jaanu", thinks that live-in-relationships which are common these days are not a negative thing.

"It is not about what is right or wrong. Live-in relationships are common these days, that's why so many movies are being made on the subject. Many of my friends are going through live-in relationships, some have worked out and some didn't. But I don't feel it is a negative thing and marriage has to do anything with it," he said at the press conference on Saturday, ahead of the film's release.

The film sees Aditya and Shraddha Kapoor as a young couple in a live-in relationship in Mumbai while Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson play an older couple who are their landlords.

"I don't think it is wrong if a couple who want to get married get into a live-in relationship to know each other better," he added.

Agreeing with her "Aashiqui 2" co-star, Shraddha said: "It (the film) is an interesting take on live-in-relationship."

But Aditya added: "The film is not only about live-in-relationship. 'Ok Jaanu' is actually a love story. The couple just happens to be in a live-in. We are not preaching about what is wrong or how modern we are. It has shown the relationship respectfully."

Directed by Shaad Ali, the romantic drama is releasing on January 13.

Cinema is biggest, easiest way to communicate with masses: Actress Bhumi Pednekar

Cinema is biggest, easiest way to communicate with masses: Actress Bhumi Pednekar

Her first film, "Dum Laga Ke Haisha", contained the message that over-sized women are not at a disadvantage as long as there is love. Her second, "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", too has a societal message. Actress Bhumi Pednekar is more than happy about Bollywood making message-based films and says cinema is the easiest way to communicate with the people.

"I feel that today's people, audiences and filmmakers, we all have become very aware of the problems and the situations that we have around us. Earlier, we were in a position to ignore them... but I think we have now reached a point where we cannot ignore certain things and I think it is fantastic...

"Cinema is the largest and the easiest way to communicate with the masses and if you can put it to good use, then why not," Bhumi asked while speaking to IANS over the phone from Mumbai.

The 27-year-old actress says "Toilet-Ek Prem Katha" isn't preachy. "It is a beautiful love story that taps into a lot of aspects of our society as well," she added.

While it is quite apparent from the title that the film is about personal hygiene, the producers are keeping the storyline close to their chests to retain an interest in the movie that is set to release in June.

Fans of "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" fondly remember Bhumi as the simple plus-sized Sandhya, and in the upcoming film starring Akshay Kumar, her role again seems to be on similar lines.

"What I did in my first film is nothing like what I am doing in 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha'. What attracts me are real stories about real Indian girls. It's not that I only pick those subjects. I pick characters purely on the basis of how good the story is and how good my role and character are," Bhumi said.

Bhumi, who before entering the world of films was a casting director, considers herself to be lucky for bagging realistic roles.

"I think I have been really lucky that I have been getting roles where I can play the girl-next-door or a girl... My roles are not similar at all," she said.

"Dum Laga Ke Haisha" came in 2015 and Bhumi's next film is all set to release in June 2017.

Will the time gap help her build a new image?

"The time I took off was planned because I had to come back to being Bhumi (my natural self) and it took me this much time. I had gained an insane amount of weight for the film and I had to drop it off," she explained.

She says she has taken the time to choose the scripts that she really wants to be a part of.

"I have been really lucky and touch wood, for me, life has always been on track," Bhumi added.

A Twitter handle in the name of Naseeruddin Shah has existed for almost two years. It was assumed to be the veteran star's social media profile. But son Vivaan clarified with a tweet, "Everyone please listen up. Very important. Dad is not on Twitter. It is a fake account!" Wonder what made the Happy New Year (2015) actor wake up to the fake profile so late?

My roles are commensurate with my age: Amitabh Bachchan

My roles are commensurate with my age: Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan came to be known as Bollywood's "Angry young man" and gradually worked his way to be tagged its "Shahenshah". After years of stepping into different characters, India's cinematic legend says his evolving on-screen persona is a reflection of the change in roles offered to him in sync with his age.

The 74-year-old has for a while dwelt upon the "interesting offers" coming his way, but he has been unable to take them on because of paucity of time.

In one of his first interviews of 2017 -- a year which will see him feature in "Aankhen 2" and "Sarkar 3" -- the cine icon has spoken about his new projects, his desire to be a part of socially-relevant cinema and how age is playing a decisive role in choosing his films.

"The process (of choosing a film) is the same, but the nature of the work offered and accepted has changed. The change is not in the process, the change is in the age. The work that comes to me is commensurate with my age," Amitabh told IANS in an email interview from Mumbai.

Despite the rare stardom that he enjoys, Big B -- as he is fondly called -- follows a very simple rule when it comes to his professional life.

"I am an actor employed to work in a particular project, and I attempt to do my best for it," said the Padma Vibhushan awardee, who aims to ensure that his work is always done to the "satisfaction of my (his) employer".

For some, he is best remembered as the towering lead in films like "Deewar", "Zanjeer", "Don" and "Sholay"; for some, his portrayal as a strict teacher from "Black" is etched in their memory. Whether it was his role as 12-year-boy Auro from "Paa" or the grumpy Bengali father from "Piku" -- Amitabh has left lasting impressions with his varied avatars for the camera.

The "Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap" star, who has also confessed that he is surviving only on 25 per cent of his liver, having lost the rest to the Hepatitis B virus, keeps a check on his health with his no drinking, no smoking, no aerated drinks policy. He makes it a point to hit the gym regularly.

Focus on fitness is a common New Year resolution -- what has Big B resolved for 2017?

"Why wait for a New Year to make a resolution -- personally or professionally. If there is a need to resolve something, do it now, immediately or tomorrow. Why wait for a year to make up your mind for it? And, no, I do not keep any resolutions.

"If there is a desire for something that I feel needs to be done, I shall do it, why wait till 2018 or 19 or 20," he questioned.

Last year, Amitabh got critical acclaim with "Pink", a movie about issues that women face. Would he like to pick more socially relevant films?

"Yes, why not? If the issue narrated in a story concerns values and issues that are socially and morally relevant, I would, if the prospective producer-director offer and agree, want to get associated with it," said the National Award-winning actor.

Talking about his upcoming projects, Amitabh said: "'Aankhen 2' is a sequel and begins from where the first one was left. And 'Sarkar 3' is already shot and will be ready for release by March 17. Here, the settings and the ambiance of the film retains the original temperament, but the story is different. There are references to the past, but the screenplay is new."

OMG! Swami Om threatens Salman, says won't let the finale happen

OMG! Swami Om threatens Salman, says won't let the finale happen

The most notorious contestant of Bigg Boss 10 Swami Om was shown an exit door in yesterday's episode after his appalling act. The action of the self-proclaimed Godman was so disgusting that host Salman Khan went beyond his routine to meet the contestants. Salman, who is usually seen on the weekend episodes, hosted a special Salman ka Vaar segment last night. The superstar condemned Swami's actions in strong words and called him a dhongi.

But seems even an ouster from the reality show too hasn't taught any lesson to Swami Om. Post his exit Swami Om threatened he wouldn't let the finale to happen if not taken back inside the house in coming two weeks. Swami made this comments when he was interviewed about his actions by journalist Dibang. When then journalist asked if he was threatening the makers, Swami Om asserted he very much was.

Since the beginning of the show, Swami Om did many things which were neither liked by his co-contestants nor the viewers. But, he crossed all limits when he threw his piss on Bani J and Rohan Mehra in a task, a few days ago. When he was locked in the jail of the house after the incident, Swami Om defended himself by saying it was water and nothing else. But not even the makers bought his defense and sent security guards to take him out of the house.

After the exit, Swami Om made the same kind of demeaning statements that he made inside the house. Only this time he didn't even leave Salman Khan. In a TV interview that he gave after his exit, Swami Om reportedly called Salman an anti-national and ISI agent. In his rant against the makers, Swami Om said that contestants adulterated his food with drugs and plotted to kill him.

A look at his statements and his behavior leads us to think- is there no limit to stooping low for this man? Maybe no.

Aamir continues to rock at BO with 'Dangal'

Aamir continues to rock at BO with 'Dangal'

Aamir Khan is his own competition. That's easier said than done. And more difficult in an industry gripped with a fever of making films in the set confinements of box office success, formula and pleasing masses. Dangal has collected Rs 330.96 crore, all set to cross PK's lifetime collection of Rs 340.8 crore. The film collected Rs 10.80 cr on Saturday.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh announced, "#Dangal hits double digits yet again on Sat... All set to cross #PK today [Sun]... [Week 3] Fri 6.66 cr, Sat 10.80 cr. Total: ₹ 330.96 cr." It's only a matter of another day before Dangal surpasses PK's collection to become the highest grosser in Hindi cinema.

Before breaking box office records, Aamir Khan preferred to break certain rules and stereotypes, so ingrained in the minds of filmmakers.

Unlike his contemporaries, Aamir played an ageing father to two grown-up daughters. That itself is worth the price of admission. How often do you see a successful star surrendering himself to a character role? The actor took pains to learn wrestling. Even though he has a small part where he wrestles with his colleague, he makes sure he looks like one. He kept meeting Phogat family to instil certain mannerisms in his own onscreen character. He might have gone to Geeta Phogat's wedding to promote Dangal, but he made sure the family gets the attention. His eagerness to work with directors who have a story to tell is itself refreshing.

No single character in Dangal looks out of place. They are glued together by their desire to put up a great show. How often do you see an amalgamation of raw talents of Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Sakshi Tanwar, Aparshakti Khurrana and Girish Kulkarni in the big budget movie? There is no wonder then why Dangal doesn't seem to slow anytime soon at the box office.
