Love horror? Drop what you're doing and watch Khooni Monday's 'The Legend of Betaal Mountain'

The genre of horror and mystery has always ruled the fancy of Indian audience. Be it Ramsay Brothers' classic 'Veerana' or Ruskin Bond's 'Ghost Stories of Shimla Hills', Indians have embraced all content that checks the right horror boxes in any possible form of storytelling. Though the same does not stand true in case of zombie thrillers, some progress has been made in that regard as well. Recently, streaming giant Netflix came up with 'Betaal', India's first zombie horror series produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Private Ltd. While the series was a treat for binge watchers, it also inspired a few others like popular YouTube channel Khooni Monday to come up with their own versions of the pioneering work of art.

Following the success of the series, the YouTube channel launched an animated story titled 'The Legend of Betaal Mountain', having a similar storyline but different treatment. The story revolves around a remote village, inhabited by a group of tribal people, where a highway is set to be constructed. The special squad sent for the purpose faces the first roadblock when the villagers warn against the idea of opening up a tunnel that is believed to be cursed. According to the villagers, opening the tunnel would lead to the unleashing of the evil of Betaal, a cruel British Army officer whose tales of torture and atrocities still make people shiver in fear.

This compels the squad to call a senior official named Sirohi, who later arrives in the village with the task to get the village vacated and the tunnel opened. What follows is a strange turn of events. While initially he encounters some unusual happenings, he is later informed about how the British officer has acquired a deity-like status and shouldn't be disturbed to let peace prevail in the region. Sirohi is repeatedly warned by villagers against opening the tunnel and even informed about the warning given by a 'tantrik' who had helped lock Betaal.

Did Sirohi pay heed to the warnings? Was the evil unleashed? Could villagers protect themselves from the horror of the officer and his army? The answers to these questions are in 'The Legend of Betaal Mountain', the latest video created by Khooni Monday. The video has also been shared by Netflix India on its YouTube channel. On day 10, Salman Khan's Tubelight earns 107 crores, investors suffer massive losses

As of day 7, the box office collection for Tubelight hit the magic 100 crores, but distributers who were expecting a lot more from the Salman Khan starrer were left disappointed.

As of day 7, the box office collection for 'Tubelight' hit the magic 100 crores, but distributers who were expecting a lot more from the Salman Khan starrer were left disappointed.  Being called one of the biggest debacles after Salman Khan’s 'Wanted', trade experts believe that 'Tubelight' despite its 100 crore turnover, its collections were expected to be a lot higher. Considering how Salman Khan’s movies do on Eid, distributors paid large sums of money for the movie’s theatrical rights, making 'Tubelight' an average revenue earner – one that won’t help them make a profit.
In a report by The Indian Express, the film has amassed around Rs 107.32 crores in nine days.  In a statement to Indianexpress.com, Girish Johar said, “Distributors have bought the film at high prices considering how Salman Khan’s film performs on Eid. They were expecting the film to do an overall box office business of Rs 300-350 crore so that they can make profit”.
According to Girish the TV and music rights will depend on the film’s overall collection. As of now, the theatrical right of the movie have been sold for Rs 132 crores, the TV and music rights have been sold for Rs 55 crores and 38 crores respectively.  “These days buyers except those who have bought theatrical rights make a box office link deal with makers where they dole out a certain figure to makers depending on how the film has performed at the box office. I am assuming that satellite rights buyers have also made a smart deal. So the whole economics of the pre-sale deals are bound to change,” Girish said.
Another factor that often played in Salman Khan’s favour was the fact that no other big movie was released in the same week as the movie. But in Tubelight’s case, even this didn’t help. Girish said that, “The public has not gone to watch the film. Had they liked Tubelight, people would have gone to watch the film after Eid. So I don’t think the absence of any big movie this weekend is going to benefit Salman Khan film”.
As per some sources that Indian Express spoke to, they said that people who invested in the film are likely to lose a sizeable amount of money. The source said, “Distributors who have bought the film’s theatrical rights have lost some money. They can lose around Rs 50-70 crore on the film” Industry experts say that the film is likely to earn about Rs 125 crores at the box office.

'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' writers to file a defamation case against 'Manini' documentary makers

 Bhumi Pednekar and Akshay Kumar
'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' Starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar is in the news for 'Plagiarism'. A documentary film maker, Praveen Vyas, has alleged that the idea behind the film has been lifted from his 2016 documentary, 'Manini' . But , the writers of the film, Siddharth and Garima, say that they had registered the script with the Film Writers Association in August 2014. Garima says, “The script was commissioned to us by Neeraj Pandey (film-maker) in 2013 itself, so we have been working on it since December that year,” says Garima.
According to the writers, the same real-life story had been reported around that time, so they decided to 'fictionalise the rest of the story' and come up with their own version. Siddharth says, "Neeraj sir liked that and asked us to go ahead with it. After that, we left for research to places like Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Nandgaon, Barsana, Jhansi and Bahraich, which is near Lucknow." In fact, the two writers had asked the film's makers to set the film around the Mathura area. "We were very happy when they chose to base the film in Mathura, as that's the milieu that we were also looking for,” says Garima, adding that the allegation of plagiarism has 'come out of the blue'.
"It's not possible to pick up a story from any documentary and take a film to the floors within a few weeks' time. Is it plausible, especially with a film that stars mainstream actors? If our work is subjected to criticism, we are fine with it. But it’s ridiculous, frustrating and insulting for us to hear that we have copied someone’s work," says Garima. Now, Siddharth and Garima plan to hit back. "Right now, we are verifying the facts and other details. Once we are done, we are, in all likelihood, going to file a defamation case. It’s amazing how people come up with such allegations at the last minute for their 15 minutes of fame," says Garima.
'Toilet:Ek Prem Katha' starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar will release on August 11.

Give our money back, 'Tubelight' distributors tell Salman Khan

Indian distributors of the Kabir Khan-directed 'Tubelight' are set to meet Salman Khan in a bid to recover their losses. The distributors, who claim that the total loss amounts to Rs 40-50 crore, are hopeful that Salman will pay off their damages

While promoting his recently released Indian war drama, 'Tubelight', Salman Khan found himself addressing questions on the likelihood of the film outshining SS Rajamouli's critically-acclaimed 'Baahubali: The Conclusion'. Little did he know that far from competing with the box-office favourite, 'Tubelight' would even fail to appeal to Bhai's fans.
mid-day has learnt that select Indian distributors of the Kabir Khan-directed film are set to meet the actor in a bid to recover their losses. A distributor, on the condition of anonymity, told mid-day, "Salman's films can collect Rs 100 crore in three days, but this time, 'Tubelight' reached the three-figure mark after a week. Single screen owners in small cities have suffered the most, with many incurring losses of over Rs 1 crore. The total loss amounts to Rs 40-50 crore. This is the first time we have faced such a situation. The distributors are hopeful that Salman will pay off their damages."

In a previous interview, trade analyst Amod Mehra had pointed out that distributors would suffer after Tubelight's debacle. "Salman is seen crying throughout the film and that's going to be the case for the distributors as well. The cost at which the film was sold is high, so recovery is going to be difficult," Mehra had said.

×At Om Puri's chautha ceremony on Monday, Naseeruddin Shah remembered his best friend and shared a few anecdotes from his early days. "Om Puri once invited me to his place in Delhi; it was a railway guard's house. He had cooked egg curry. I asked him to show me where he sleeps. He took me to a corridor facing the station and a stench greeted me. I saw a neat charpoy with a pair of chappals slipped under the bed. The stove on which he had made the anda curry for me was also there. There were a couple of books on exercising apart from Constantin Stanislavski's My Life In Art.

I need not describe this, but wanted you to know Om's journey from the corridors of an old Delhi station to the successful actor we all fantasise about," he said.
Naseer also recalled how Om Puri would impersonate the late actor Amrish Puri over the phone. "In those days, there were only landlines. I would hear Amrish Puri's voice on the other end and be on my best behaviour. Many thought Om was Amrish Puri's son or brother and Govind Nihalini is solely responsible for it [creating that perception]. I envied Om's voice and he envied my English [speaking abilities]."

Tom Alter to play Ruskin Bond in short film

Veteran actor Tom Alter has taken on a role as celebrated author Ruskin Bond in a new short film, its maker Bhargav Saikia has revealed.
Saikia, whose Kashmir-set independent thriller production "Kaafiron Ki Namaaz" and horror short film "Awakenings" was widely acclaimed, is happy to welcome the actor on board for his new project, which narrates one of Bond's short stories. The director-producer did not wish to name which story of the noted author he has picked to translate to the screen.
Talking about roping in Tom Alter for the role, Saikia told IANS that his extensive acting experience in films, theatre and television, and his close friendship with the author, will be an asset to the film.
While Saikia is looking forward to a "fruitful collaboration" with the actor, he is happy that he has Bond's support for the film too.
"I met Ruskin Bond sir in Landour (near Mussoorie) last year and he was very kind to grant me the permission to make a short film on one of his stories," Saikia said and clarified that his film is not a biopic on Ruskin Bond.
Other cast members of the project are yet to be revealed.
India's much-loved author, Ruskin Bond, is 82 and continues to enthral readers with his stories, mostly themed on nature.
Earlier, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj had adapted two of his stories for the film medium. The films made were "The Blue Umbrella" and "7 Khoon Maaf".

×The forthcoming release "Haraamkhor" was made via crowd funding, but what many don't know is that filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra gave a personal grant for its production. It was when Chopra read the film's script that he was convinced to contribute personally for the film.
Producer Guneet Monga of Sikhya Entertainment said in a statement: "We were at the NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) pitch lab where we had to pitch our film. And we won the pitch which was sponsored by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and we got the grant of the money from him, which worked towards the post-production of our film.
"The film was produced through a crowd fund on Facebook. Phantom Films wasn't involved. But when the film was wrapped up, we showed it to Anurag (Kashyap) since he's both Shlok (director Shlok Sharma) and my mentor. He saw the movie and loved it and came on board in the capacity of a producer. The film was produced under Rs 1 crore."

After almost 20 years, Shoojit Sircar's dream project, a biopic on Udham Singh, becomes reality

New Delhi: Gestating for nearly two decades, director Shoojit Sircar's dream project, a biopic on revolutionary Udham Singh, is finally set to become a reality.
Shoojit, who produced last year's most impactful film "Pink", says he wanted to make the movie on Udham Singh right after he shifted to Mumbai.
"I have been working on the story for 18-19 years now. When I shifted to Mumbai, this was the first film that I wanted to make but something else would always come up. It is set in pre-Independence era, so it was a little difficult to plan," Shoojit told PTI in an interview.
The director says his visit to Jallianwala Bagh in the '90s triggered the idea about Udham Singh, who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in British India in 1940, to avenge the 1919 massacre.
"In the '90s we had a group in Delhi called Act One which had me, Piyush Mishra and Ashish Vidyarthi. We used to sing songs of national harmony."
"During this time, Punjab was coming out of turmoil. I visited the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh at that time. When I went there and saw what actually happened there, that triggered me emotionally."
Shoojit, who has films like "Yahaan", "Vicky Dina", "Madras Cafe" and "Piku" to his credit, says Udham Singh is a forgotten hero.
"He was one of the prominent faces of the freedom movement but youngsters don't know much about this martyr. He is a forgotten hero. Through my film, I want the youngsters to know him."
Shoojit has already started work on the film but he is mum about casting.
The project on Udham Singh is not the only film that will keep the director busy in 2017 as he is collaborating with his "Piku" scriptwriter Juhi Chaturvedi for a love story.
"Juhi and I are working again after 'Vicky Donor' and 'Piku'. We share a very good rapport. It is a simple love story. There will be issues around it. We are currently working on it. We are producing with Ronnie Lahiri. I will direct both the films."
He is also one the producers of "Runningshaadi.com" and Shoojit says he is happy for the film, which has been directed by Amit Roy and stars Amit Sadh and Taapsee Pannu.
Talking about "Pink", which has been hailed as one of the strongest movies to come out of Bollywood on the issues that modern women face, Shoojit says they were careful in keeping the story's integrity intact.
"When you make a film like 'Pink', you are working on the edge. We were very careful about the integrity of the issue.
With 'Pink', we tried to address all the issues that women face. We decided to open up completely so that there is no debate left.
"Similarly, 'Vicky Donor' could have easily been slapstick but I knew that the topic we were dealing with was serious. So, we walked a thin line."
