Amala Paul

Born 26 October 1990 (age 23)
Aluva,Ernakulam,Kerala
Nationality Indian
Other names Anakha
Ethnicity Nasrani
Occupation Actress, model
Years active 2009 – present
Height 5 ft 6 in
Spouse(s) A.L.Vijay  (m. 2014)(2014 - present)
Amala Paul is an Indian film actress, who works in the South Indian film industries. After appearing in supporting roles in the Malayalam film Neelathamara and Veerasekaran in Tamil, she received critical acclaim for the portrayal of a controversial character in the film, Sindhu Samaveli. Despite the failure of that film, Amala became noted after playing the title role in Mynaa, receiving critical acclaim for her work.

Career

Early career

Amala, after finishing her Higher Secondary education, took a year out before planning to pursue engineering. She later joined St Teresa's college, to pursue a BA Degree in Communicative English. At the time, her modelling portfolio was spotted by noted Malayalam director Lal Jose who offered her a supporting role in his remake, Neelathamara (2009). Despite emerging a success, the film failed to attract any further offers, as she had anticipated. She pursued roles in Tamil films and went on to sign the low-budget comedy film Vikadakavi which was delayed and ultimately became her sixth release, while also signing on to play the lead role in another small budget film Veerasekaran (2010). The film, which became her maiden Tamil release, was panned by critics and went completely unnoticed, while Amala's role was being labelled as 'minimal', and she later cited that she regretted doing the film and many of her scenes were edited out. Amala Paul then went on to work in Samy's controversial Sindhu Samaveli (2010), portraying the role of Sundari, who has an illicit relationship with her father-in-law. The director of the film had previously drawn criticism for his depictions of illicit romances as well as for assaulting his previous lead actress in a film, but Amala played down the issue citing that she had no problem with the director. She was approached after the major portions of her next release, Mynaa were ready and signed on before listening to the entirety of the story, claiming that she was shocked but not upset with the controversial scenes which she heard later. Upon release, the film met with contrasting reviews, whilst some critics refused to give the film a rating, declaring their disgust at the film's plot. Amala's performance won her critical acclaim. However her success was marred with extreme reactions from the public, with Amala claiming she received death threats from anonymous callers and was publicly scolded by women at a cinema hall in Chennai.

2010s

Amala's next release, the romantic drama film Mynaa (2010) by Prabhu Solomon, made her a recognised actress in the industry. The film had garnered much anticipation prior to release, with noted distributors Udhayanidhi Stalin and Kalpathi S. Aghoram purchasing the rights of the film after being impressed with it. Amala played the village belle Mynaa, attaining unanimous praise from critics for her portrayal; a critic labelled her work as "outstanding" and that she put in a "riveting performance", while other reviews claimed she had "immense talent" and scores in "every instance" in the title role. The film, which also saw her gain recognition from noted actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, subsequently became a large commercial success at the box-office. Amala Paul gained recognition from several award committees and notably secured the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress, while also gaining nominations in the Best Actress category at the Filmfare Awards and the Vijay Awards.
Following the success of Mynaa, Amala became touted as the "new star of 2011" as she subsequently signed on to several prominent projects. Her first release of 2011 was in a supporting role in the Malayalam drama film, Ithu Nammude Katha, a remake of the successful Tamil film Naadodigal and the second was meant to be her launch in Tamil films, the coming-to-age tale of five friends Vikadakavi with the film opening to limited screens. Both films opened to limited screens due to the moderate budget of the projects, with her performance in the latter being described as "full of potential".She went on to sign three big budget films with established production houses, with the drama Deiva Thirumagal directed by Vijay, featuring her opposite Vikram and alongside Anushka, becoming her next release. Her portrayal of school correspondent Shwetha Rajendran won critical acclaim with a reviewer citing that her "expressive eyes help her leave a mark in a small but important role" whilst another critic claimed she "acquits herself well". Her final release of 2011 was Ram Gopal Varma's Bejawada which marked her début in Telugu language films. The film saw her portray college girl, Geetanjali, and featured her opposite Naga Chaitanya, but the film opened to negative reviews and became a surprise box office failure.
Amala Paul's first release of 2012 was in Linguswamy's multi-starring action entertainer, Vettai, alongside Arya, Madhavan and Sameera Reddy. The film opened to critical and commercial acclaim with The New York Times claiming the film "entertains without breaking any new ground, though it can also surprise". Amala Paul won mixed feedback for her performance; while the critic from Sify mentioned she "is lovely to look at and her feisty performance proves that a star is born", Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff cited she "struts, pouts and hams to the hilt". The actress had three films released on the Valentine's Day weekend of 2012, with Balaji Mohan's bilingual Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi and Love Failure becoming critical and commercial successes. The film, made in Tamil and Telugu, featured her alongside Siddharth and portrayed as her college girl, Parvathi, showing her romantic skills. About the Tamil version, a reviewer from The Hindu wrote: "Amala Paul, after coming across as convincing in her last few movies, looks finally set as a leading lady", while another critic labelled that she "comes across as natural" and "it is a pleasure to see her in a role and costumes that suit her age as compared to her recent movies". Rediff.com called the Telugu version of the film "refreshing", highlighting that the lead pair's on-screen chemistry "sparkles".The romantic thriller Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal opposite Adharvaa, also released on the same day in which she played Charulatha, a modern girl based in Bangalore. The film won mixed reviews, though the lead pair's on-screen chemistry was praised by critics, while another reviewer noted that "Amala renders an effortless act".[23][24] She played a notable role in renowned director Dr. Biju's Aakashathinte Niram, which was her first art-house film. The film was screened at the competition section for the Golden Goblet Award in the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival. She paired with veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal in the film Run Babby Run in which she played the role of a senior news channel editor. The film was a big commercial success and her performance as well as her chemistry with Mohanlal were highly appreciated.
In 2013, Amala Paul achieved her first commercial success in Telugu cinema. Her first release in 2013, V. V. Vinayak's directorial Naayak, opposite Ram Charan Teja, went on to be one of the biggest critical as well as commercial success of the year. Her next film was Puri Jagannadh's romantic comedy Iddarammayilatho opposite Allu Arjun. Upon release, Amala's performance was appreciated by the critics. Sangeetha Devi Dundroo of The Hindu commented "Amala Paul manages to pull off a character that traverses a thin line between being naïve and downright silly. We wish we saw more of her." Another reviewer, Sasidhar AS from The Times of India commented "Amala Paul's characterisation is a delight, and she plays Komali so effectively that you'll be left wondering who else could have done the role better than her. She was a perfect choice to play a traditional Telugu girl." She was later seen in A. L. Vijay's action entertainer,Thalaivaa opposite Vijay, as a police officer. Her most recent release was Samuthirakani's Nimirndhu Nil opposite Jayam Ravi, which was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Janda Pai Kapiraju, in which Nani reprised the role of Jayam Ravi.

Personal life

Amala was born in a Syro-Malabar Catholic Nasrani family on 26 October 1990 in Ernakulam, Kerala to Paul Varghese and Annice Paul. After completing her schooling from GOVT.Girls HSS Aluva, she took a sabbatical to begin a career in films, but has since joined St. Teresa's College in Kochi, to pursue a BA degree in English. Her father had been strictly against Amala pursuing an acting career, but was forced to accept her decision with her older brother, Abijith, strongly backing her ambition. She later claimed she had performing arts in her, revealing that her mother was a singer and her dad was into theatre in college.[38] Amala had changed her on-screen name to Anakha, on director Samy's insistence, who cited that another actress, Amala had already made her name popular. However, after the failure of Sindhu Samaveli, she reverted to her birth name since she felt that the replacement had brought her bad luck.
As early as 2011, when Amala was working on Deiva Thirumagal, she was romantically linked to director A. L. Vijay but denied that the pair were dating. The pair subsequently fell in love and announced in early 2014. that they were set to get married in mid 2014. On June 7, 2014 she got engaged to Vijay at Aluva in Kochi. The couple got married on June 12 at Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Hall, Chennai, as per Hindu religious beliefs.

Jessica Chastain demands a female superhero movie

Jessica Chastain demands a female superhero movie

Actress Jessica Chastain demands a female superhero movie, which should have Scarlett Johansson in the lead role.

The acclaimed actress, who starred in the 2013 horror film `Mama`, says Marvel Studios should make a movie in which Johansson and her `Black Widow` character play the central role, reports contactmusic.com.

The 37-year-old actress told The Wrap: "Where is the Scarlett Johansson superhero movie? I don't understand it, why is it taking so long for this? This woman clearly shows that people want to go see her in the movies."

"...She shows that she kicks ass, she's a great actress. 'Under the Skin' is an incredible film, and why are we still waiting for a go-ahead on a superhero movie starring Scarlett Johansson?

"To me, it's a no-brainer. You want to make money, put Scarlett Johansson in (her own) superhero movie,` she added.

Meanwhile, Johansson, 29, is set to reprise her role of Black Widow, an international assassin, in the upcoming `Avengers: Age of Ultron`, in which she appears alongside fellow Hollywood superstars Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth.

Kate Mara splits from Max Minghella

The `House of Cards` actress Kate Mara and `The Mindy Project` actor Max Minghella, who were having an on and off relationship for the past four years, have reportedly finally decided to call it quits.

"Max and Kate have broken up and gotten back together a few times over the course of their relationship, but this one looks like it's sticking. The relationship just ran its course,` usmagazine.com quoted a source as saying.

The 31-year-old beauty, who was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Monday, attended the event without Minghella.

The duo, who was photographed enjoying a romantic stroll in Manhattan, New York City in June, was introduced to each other by Kate's younger sister, Rooney Mara, on the set of `The Social Network` in 2009.

I'm not a drug addict: Keira Knightley

I`m not a drug addict: Keira Knightley

Actress Keira Knightley believes she must have coped with being famous because she has avoided becoming a drug addict, despite shooting to fame at a young age.

The 29-year-old shot to fame as a teenager in 2002 comedy-drama movie `Bend It Like Beckham`, and she feels grateful that she hasn't gone down the route of becoming addicted to illegal substances like some celebrities who became famous at an early age, reports contactmusic.com.

Speaking about her rise to fame, she said: "Luckily it was so long ago that I can't remember what it was like when it happened. But I'm still here, I'm still alive and I'm not a drug addict, so it must have been all right."

The `Begin Again` star is married to Klaxons vocalist James Righton and admits it seems a lot more common for young musicians than movie stars to become embroiled in a world of drugs because they live their lives as "extremely as they can".

"They very much walk that line. A lot live life as extremely as they can, and that's absolutely fascinating for so many people and has been since the beginning of time,` she said.

"We've been fascinated by youth that has absolutely no fear of anything and could corrupt and could die at any second. It's the moth-to-the-flame thing. So much of rock 'n' roll is about that,` added the actress, who has starred in "Pirates Of The Caribbean" series and "Pride & Prejudice".

Rapper Kanye West is reportedly looking for a prominent role in a `laugh out loud comedy`.

West has said in the past that he wants to spread his wings and dabble in other spheres of the entertainment industry outside music, reports contactmusic.com.

Just last year, he managed to get a cameo spot in Will Ferrell's comedy sequel `Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.`

A source told the American edition of OK! magazine that "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", the 2004 original to that film, piqued West's interest in comedy acting, and that “he's told his agent to find him a role in a big comedy, but so far no one's interested.`

Alesha Dixon reveals solution to stretch marks

Singer-model Alesha Dixon says using Vitamin E oil on a regular basis helped her combat stretch marks.

After giving birth to her daughter Azura Sienna in October 2013, the former `Misteeq` singer appeared to bounce back to her pre-baby figure almost immediately. But despite being able to fit into her old wardrobe, Dixon says that she suffered from stretch marks due to her pregnancy.

"Vitamin E oil is so nourishing and super effective. I use it daily - it's brilliant for stretch marks and scars,` femalefirst.co.uk quoted the `Britain's Got Talent` as saying.

She also added: "Coconut oil is a great multi-tasking product - it's great for nourishing hair and skin. I also love to cook with it."

Earlier this year, Dixon launched her own fragrance called Rose Quartz as part of a larger Crystal Collection and she couldn't resist boasting about her "gorgeous" perfume.

"My gorgeous new fragrance is light and feminine with notes of grapefruit, magnolia and amber,` she said.

Tom Alter brings Sahir back to life in bravura performance

Tom Alter brings Sahir back to life in bravura performance

A rebel son, a romantic student, a fire-eating poet, and finally a principled lyricist in Bollywood - he was all this and more and the various facets of Sahir Ludhianvi's remarkable personality were brought to life by veteran actor Tom Alter at a play here Saturday.

Abdul Hai 'Sahir' occupies a notable niche in the Hindi film industry. From Raj Kapoor to Amitabh Bachchan, from Vyjanthimala to Neetu Singh, some of the most memorable songs of every prominent Bollywood actor over three decades owe their appeal to Sahir's magic lyrics.

But Sahir was far more than a song-writer, he was among the leading poets of his generation, which included Kaifi Azmi, Ali Sardar Jafri and Majrooh Sultanpuri, capable of expressing the most exquisite romantic thoughts as well as incendiary outbursts against oppression and inequity. And he opens up in "Parchhaiyaan" - named after Sahir's second published work of poetry - and written and directed by Urdu writer Suhail Akhtar Warsi.

The play begins with Sahir, towards the end of his life, mulling over its trajectory and various highs and lows - his rebellion against his landed family, his father's ill-treatment of his mother, his first romance at school and the subsequent expulsion, his involvement in the Progressive Writers Movement in Lahore and the freedom struggle, Independence and the Partition, his escape from Lahore to then Bombay (after the Pakistan government sought to arrest him) and his long sojourn in the Indian film industry.

In Bollywood, his biggest legacy, he himself notes in the play, was ensuring equality for the lyricist on par with the singer and the music composer - even as far as the remuneration was concerned, recalling asking one producer for one rupee more than the singer was getting.

As he notes, if a writer has to sell his thought and art, then he should be most adequately composed - "it (the art) should be weighed on scales of silver..."

Interspersed with his recollections, featuring a younger Sahir and his first love (only referred to as 'She'), were many of Sahir's most famous compositions like "Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon/Main har ek pal ka shayar hoon" ("Kabhie Kabhie"), "Allah tero naam, Ishwar tero naam" and "Main zindagi ka saath" ("Hum Dono"), "Na to karwan ka talaash hai" ("Barsaat ki Raat"), "Laaga chunri mein daag" ("Daag") and `Saathi Haath Badhana` and `Yeh desh hai veer jawaano ka` ("Naya Daur").

The songs were complemented with spirited dances put on by students of the Genesis Global School, the venue.

In carefully modulated and chaste Urdu, delivered in his trademark baritone, Tom Alter was Sahir all over - a remarkable transformation for an actor who began his career as the stereotypical British Raj official, but over the years, even graduated to portraying Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and now this maverick poet from Punjab.

Chitra Singh wants Bharat Ratna for late Jagjit Singh

Chitra Singh wants Bharat Ratna for late Jagjit Singh
Ghazal singer Chitra Singh, who is fighting a lone battle to get her husband and late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh the Bharat Ratna, says he deserves the country's highest civilian honour.

"I think he deserves the Bharat Ratna, no less...The country must give him his due. Manmohan Singh-ji released two commemorative stamps on Feb 8 of Jagjit-ji. That was okay. But what about the recognition that Jagjit Saab deserves," Chitra asked.

The ghazal maestro's widow, herself a renowned ghazal singer in the 1970s and 1980s, had been persuading Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi for many years to award the Bharat Ratna to her husband.

"They gave Jagjit-ji the Padma Bhushan in 2003. Eleven years have passed since. Every year we expected him to get the Bharat Ratna," she said.

In 2012, for a function in Delhi on Jagjit Singh's first death anniversary, Chitra had met Sonia Gandhi to invite her.

But she couldn't help with the Bharat Ratna. "Sonia-ji was extremely gracious. I was told I wouldn't be given more than five to seven minutes. But she spent 40 minutes with me. I raised the subject of the Bharat Ratna for my husband. But it didn't go any further.

"I raised the issue with Manmohan Singh-ji who was very close to Jagjit-ji. He too was very gracious. He said he'd try his best. But nothing happened," she said.

Chitra feels Jagjit's fans should begin an online campaign for him to get a Bharat Ratna.

"When I meet his admirers and fans they all say say he should get the Bharat Ratna. But that's it. It never goes beyond that. If his fans really feel he should get the Bharat Ratna, then they need to hammer it into the new government."

She feels the new Bharatiya Janata Party government would do the needful.

"Narendra Modi-ji had said on Jagjitji's death that not only had we lost a great musician but Gujarat had lost a friend. My husband had a soft corner for Gujaratis. He had also met Modi-ji," she said.

Jagjit, known as much for his ghazals and bhajans as for his work in Hindi cinema, had died following a brain haemorrhage. He was 70.

Political and social activists Saturday filed police complaints against Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for his series of objectionable tweets on Lord Ganesh, officials said.

Social activists and organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, have condemned Varma's comments and demanded an apology from him as well as police action.

'MTV Webbed' host Kritika's online accounts hacked

`MTV Webbed` host Kritika`s online accounts hacked

Actress Kritika Kamra, the host of cyber crime-related TV show "MTV Webbed 2", became a victim of hacking. Her email and Facebook accounts were hacked recently, but she says her experience on the show helped her take notice of the issue quickly.

"My Gmail and Facebook accounts were recently hacked into. Someone sent me a Google document claiming it was a script. I clicked on it only to find a blank document. The next thing I knew - my accounts were hacked. But the tips I learned from 'MTV Webbed' really helped me identify this immediately," said Kritika.

She said that in one of the episodes of the show, she learnt that Gmail gives a user an option of logging into his or her account via multiple devices or restricting login to one device at a time.

"So if you choose the restricted setting, Gmail alerts you in case someone is trying to log into your account from another device. This is what alerted me and prevented the hacker from doing damage," she said.

This is not the first time that Kritika has faced this hacking.

"Such a thing happened to me in the past too and back then my images and other important documents were stolen. But this time I was prepared. Now thanks to what I learned on the show, I surf smart and hence I stayed safe," she added.

"MTV Webbed 2" is a show conceptualized to raise awareness about the safe usage of the internet. It was recently extended to 24 episodes from the initial run of 16 episodes due to its increasing popularity.
