Jake Gyllenhaal shares fond memories of Heath Ledger

Jake Gyllenhaal shares fond memories of Heath Ledger

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal says Heath Ledger, his onscreen lover in "Brokeback Mountain", was "extraordinary" and "always somebody who I admired".

Ledger died almost eight years ago, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

Ledger died in January 2008, less than three years after "Brokeback Mountain" hit the cinemas and won prestigious awards.

The Australian actor was on the peak of his career when he was found unconscious in his bed by his housekeeper. He was in the middle of filming his acclaimed role as Joker in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight".

In the 10th anniversary of "Brokeback Mountain", Gyllenhaal recalled the time he got the script and did not hesitate to play the role of a gay cowboy.

"It's one of the most beautiful scripts I've ever read, and it was Ang Lee, and at the time Heath was a friend of mine, before we even shot the movie, and always sort of alluring to me," the 34-year-old actor said.

Gyllenhaal said Ledger had an aura that made people like him.

"Heath was always somebody who I admired. He was way beyond his years as a human, in a way. I wasn't quite sure where he came from.

"I mean, I know he's from Perth, but I wasn't really quite sure where he came from, and I think that's the feeling most people got when they were around him and why he was so extraordinary," he added.

Olsen sisters won't appear in 'Fuller House'

Olsen sisters won't appear in 'Fuller House'

Actresses-designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will not act in "Fuller House", a sequel to the popular sitcom "Full House" that featured the twins.

Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky on the sitcoms, shared that the filming on "Fuller House" has wrapped and the Olsens "didn't come in", as many suspected would be the case, reports eonline.com.

When it was announced that "Fuller House", which stars Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber, was in the works with a reunion of the original cast planned, all eyes went to the Olsen twins.

The fashion designers said they hadn't heard about the project and after some back and forth with John Stamos (who plays Uncle Jesse on the shows and an executive producer on the new series), a firm statement was made by producers.

But then in July, Netflix's Ted Sarandos seemed to hint the Olsen twins could be swayed.

The cast includes Louglin, Stamos, Barber, Cameron Bure, Bob Saget, Scott Weinger, Dave Coulier, and Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit.

What about future episodes?

"No, I don't think they're going to make a cameo. They didn't this season," said Loughlin.

Leonardo Dicaprio eyes froze on set

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio's eyes froze shut while working on the set of his latest movie "The Revenant".

The 41-year-old actor was working on the Alejandro G. Iñarritu directorial when the crew got caught in horrific weather conditions which lasted for an hour in temperatures that dropped to minus 40, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

He said: "We were doing an emotional scene, and then this windstorm came, and it was just brutal. We were out there for an hour, and I said, 'Alejandro, what the hell are we doing?'"

Despite the weather conditions, Iñarritu encouraged the cast of the thriller to forget about the cold climate.

He said: "It's a mental state. Weather doesn't exist."

DiCaprio admitted he was extremely grateful for a hot air blower on set which he nicknamed "the octopus".

Speaking at a question and answer session here, he added: "We actually had a machine on set, I nicknamed it the octopus because it was like a giant hot air blower with eight tentacles, and we'd all rush up to it and thaw our hands."

Nandita Das feels ‘inspired’ in Lahore

Nandita Das feels ‘inspired’ in Lahore

Actress Nandita Das, who was in Lahore for a two-day festival, found the experience inspirational.

The actress, who has earlier worked in Pakistani film `Ramchand Pakistani`, was here for two-day Khayaal Festival - an endeavour to promote art, literature, discussion and debate in Pakistan.

`Thank you @KhayaalFestival for having me here in Lahore. You push the boundaries of culture to bring about change. Felt inspired,` Nandita tweeted.

When IANS asked her about the fest earlier, she said: `It is bringing together writers, thinkers, filmmakers, artists, actors and musicians to discuss and debate various issues. I am in two sessions and one of them will be a conversation with the Pakistan director/actor of the film on Manto.`

Nandita is working on a script to trace the life of Pakistani short story writer Sadat Hassan Manto.

Sridevi’s chapter in my book is a love letter: Ram Gopal Varma

Sridevi’s chapter in my book is a love letter: Ram Gopal Varma

His admiration for Sridevi is not known to many but filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has opened up about it in his autobiography by dedicating a chapter on his celebrity crush.

In the book titled `Guns and Thighs`, Varma describes Sridevi as the `Goddess of beauty` and why he cannot forgive her husband Boney Kapoor.

`It was a love letter... I was going overboard but that was my feeling. Everyone can have a crush on anyone, be it on a real person or a celebrity, you enjoy that feeling of high... It is almost like a drug.

`...To see Sridevi making tea in Boney Kapoor's kitchen was a huge letdown. I won't forgive him because he brought the angel down from heaven to the kitchen of his apartment,` Varma said while confessing his love for the `Chandni` star. Moving on, the `Satya` director was asked about his feelings for actress Urmila Matondkar, who was considered his muse.

Varma revealed in the book that capturing Urmila's beauty on camera was one of the reasons behind making `Rangeela`, which turned the actress into a superstar overnight.

`I honestly feel it is important for director to get obsessed with the characters. I think it is similar to how I shotAmitabh Bachchanin 'Sarkar'. He is obviously not a woman but I was feeling a high to capture his close-ups and highlight his minutest of expressions. That way, I don't see a fundamental difference between a 'Rangeela' and a 'Sarkar',` he said.

Among the people, who Varma has dedicated his autobiography to, is author Ayn Rand, best known for his book `The Fountainhead`.

The filmmaker said it is his greatest dream to adapt the book into a movie.

`My greatest dream is to make a film on 'The Fountainhead', which I have been restraining from doing because it is so much in the mind and I am yet to able to decode that, for example if you read about Howard Roark or think about him then it is very difficult to see him in person.

`The moment you see him in person, you would think how he is moving, how he will smile, how will he have a sip of coffee... But that's my all time dream to make the film.`

The Tricolour moves Akshay Kumar to tears!

The Tricolour moves Akshay Kumar to tears!

Well, we are talking about a scene from a movie, but what's real here is Akshay Kumar's tears - glycerine free.

He was shooting a scene for his next film Airlift, where the Indian flag was raised as the first flight took off from Kuwait with Indian evacuees, post Saddam Hussein's invasion. We know that Akki is a toughie from the outside, but during this shot he was so swept with emotion that he cried without any glycerine.

Akshay recalls the time when Kuwait was invaded in August 1990 and he was awaiting the release of his debut filmSaugandh. He wasn't aware that such a huge number of Indians were brought back in an operation of 488 flights in 59 days. The actor says, "So when I heard about it, I was like... 'Did this really happen?' I also learnt that considering the international geo-political situation prevalent then, our government ensured it didn't make headlines. While playing my character, I could feel what Indians were going through at that time."

Bollywood artistes raising their voice against intolerance have an unlikely - and perhaps unwelcome - ally from across the border.

A Pakistani filmmaker whose film got an award last year at a film festival in Delhi has joined the award waapsi bandwagon, but that may well trip the participation of other Pakistanis this year.

Whether India is a tolerant country or not has seemed to have piqued the interest of the Pakistani film fraternity now, with a Pakistani director joining India's so-called #awardwapsi gang. It's not certain what Khalid Hasan Khan was trying to achieve when he returned the award given to him at Delhi International Film Festival (DIFF) last year for his filmHotal, in protest against the 'growing intimidation of Bollywood stars in India'. However, he has probably managed to get all Pakistani filmmakers and their films left out of the festival this year. With the fourth edition of the festival about to start in a few days, officials are now left wondering, what if they award other Pakistani artistes this year and they too return it?

Rana Daggubati: 'Bahubali' proved that a strong story can travel places

Rana Daggubati: 'Bahubali' proved that a strong story can travel places

The year 2015 has been significant for Rana Daggubati. The actor, who debuted in Bollywood with Dum Maaro Dum (2011), was also seen flexing muscles in Neeraj Pandey's spy thriller Baby. Then, cinema lovers across the country took notice of him as Bhallala Deva in south director S S Rajamouli's blockbuster Bahubali: The Beginning. Now, he has caught the fancy of brands and is signing endorsement deals with them.

An excited Rana says, "By becoming such a huge hit across the country,Bahubali proved that a strong story can travel places.I am optimistic that the sequel will resonate more with the audience and open several avenues when it releases next year.Ultimately, it's the emotions in the story that connect; the relations and the conflicts are similar in any language." He says that almost 40 per cent of the sequel has already been shot. The actor, who is focussing on content that cuts across regions and languages, will soon be seen as a naval officer in Ghazi,to be made in Hindi and Telugu and dubbed in Tamil. "It's based on a true incident during the 1971 war and is India's first submarine film," says Rana who has the sequel of his Telugu debut,Leader (2010) lined up later.

Having produced the National Award-winning Telugu film Bommalata(2004), he is also producing the Telugu remake of last year's Marathi hit Poster Boyz, in association with Akshay Kumar. Explaining how cinema has brought the world closer, Rana says, "Today, a filmmaker sitting in Mumbai can make a film in Madurai. In India, we have five big film industries and together they make the biggest movie industry in the world. That's our strength. We have access to different kinds of cinema. If we have a great story, we can take it across to a wider audience."

Anupam Kher wants postponing of cricket matches with Pakistan

Anupam Kher wants postponing of cricket matches with Pakistan

India should not resume its cricketing ties with Pakistan until the situation at the border becomes "normal", feels veteran actor Anupam Kher. Kher, 60, is in Jharkhand to shoot for an upcoming biopic on Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He plays Dhoni's father Pan Singh in the movie.

"According to me, till the time our people are being killed on the front, matches should not be held. If diplomacy says that we should give a chance to enemy or neighbours, sports has its own status, people have their own status and music has its own status, that diplomacy has to be sorted out by the government," he told reporters here.

Citing the recent killing of Santosh Mahadik in a shootout with militants in Kashmir, he said that not playing cricket will be a way to show sensitivity towards the bereaved family.

"Some things are above other things. What I feel is we should show sensitivity and cricket matches can be postponed for the time being, till situation becomes normal. When people stop killing innocents... then we will think. There is no urgency to play," he added.

There is a proposal for resumption of cricket matches between India and Pakistan. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is awaiting the government's response on the fate of the series. The Pakistan Cricket Board has already got clearance from its government.

Both countries have not played Test cricket since 2007 but Pakistan toured India in the winter of 2012-13 for a short limited-over series.

Ranbir’s Nostalgic Solitary Strolls in Shimla

Ranbir’s Nostalgic Solitary Strolls in Shimla

Ranbir Kapoor loves his work, acting, above all else. That's no secret. Like most artistes in love with their craft, Ranbir loves to revisit early, definitive moments of his film career. He made the most of the Shimla schedule of 'Tamasha' to relive memories of his very first experience on a film set.

Shimla, the well-preserved holiday capital of the British Raj, has a unique feature. At its heart, this hill town has a winding esplanade that has a unique Gothic church, a bandstand, a Victorian theater & a Tudor stone town hall set on one side. Close to the esplanade is the beautiful Sidhowal lodge.

Having finished a day's shooting, Ranbir would often walk from the Sidhowal lodge to the 'Mall' to relive his memories of assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali for 'Black'. Shot during the cold, beautiful winters in Shimla, Ranbir learnt the ropes as an assistant director on this film.

Says a source, `Ranbir would often walk down by himself at late hours, when chances of anyone recognizing him are few, towards the mall. He doesn't say much, but must be thinking of what a long way he has come since those early days as a rookie assistant on a film set!`

I can't talk about 'Half Girlfriend' script: Kriti Sanon

Actress Kriti Sanon, who has been roped in for director Mohit Suri's next film titled "Half Girlfriend", an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's book by the same name, says she has liked the script but can't talk about it right now.

"I don't think I can talk about that. I have met Mohit and it's a script that I have really liked. I have also launched the book and I have read it a year ago but there are other things that need to be figured out," Kriti told IANS.

"There is nothing locked right now so I feel it's not right for me to talk about it," she added.

Apparently, Kriti is paired opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in "Half Girlfriend".

Earlier, Varun Dhawan denied being offered a role in the film.

Talking about Chetan Bhagat's books, Kriti said they have a "filmy factor" to them.

"I loved the book and I feel that all of Chetan's books have a filmy factor to them, so when you read them, you can imagine a film being made on it. I have enjoyed reading all his books and I always look forward to reading his books."

I've nothing to do with SRK, Kajol's chemistry in 'Dilwale': Varun

I've nothing to do with SRK, Kajol's chemistry in 'Dilwale': Varun

Actor Varun Dhawan, who has an interesting role in the Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Dilwale", says he was not sceptical before signing the film as he has "own love story" which is different from that of the lead actors.

"My role in the film has its own story. I have nothing to do with Shah Rukh and Kajol's chemistry in the film. I have my own track going, I have my own love story which is different from them," Varun told IANS.

"Besides it was more of a learning experience for me as an actor to be part of such a big project. The film has romance, action, drama, everything in it... It's a very intense and emotional film," he added.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, "Dilwale" also features Kriti Sanon. The film is slated for a December 18th release.

The film will hit the screens along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Bajirao Mastani", but the actor says he fails to understand why there is a problem if two films are releasing on the same day.

"I don't know why there's a problem if two films release on the same time. I am not the producer of either of the films, but I don't know how it's going to create an impact. Hopefully both films will do well," he said.

"I feel comedy is one of toughest genres to explore and I am looking forward to see audience reaction," the 28-year-old added.

Revealing his experience working with Kajol and SRK, he said: "It was quite cool the way he (Shah Rukh) acts and treats his team. It's really very encouraging he is never too busy to not connect with his fans."

"As far as Kajol is concerned she is amazing she is one of the funniest people I have worked with and I really enjoyed working with her," he added.

Varun, who will be seen playing Shah Rukh's younger brother in the film, says he could relate to the story as he has a brother in real life as well.

"In a way it was easier for me to connect with this story and it was very helpful as I have a brother in real life. My plot in the film is very interesting," he added.

About his co-actor Kriti, Varun said: "Kriti is a very beautiful girl so it was quite easy to have chemistry with her. For me she is out of the league in the film so I don't know how to be constantly around her. It's quite interesting and funny dynamic."

"I haven't decided yet whether I will also be acting in it or not I am not sure whether I will be able to juggle both," she said.

The actress who has lately been busy donning the producer's hat also assured that she has not quit acting.

"If I would have got an earth-shattering script, I would have dropped everything and worked on it. I love acting but that earth shattering role has not come my way. People feel I am not acting for some strange reasons but that's not true," the 33-year-old said.

Priyanka Chopra to be back in Mumbai to promote 'Bajirao Mastani'?

Priyanka Chopra to be back in Mumbai to promote 'Bajirao Mastani'?

Priyanka Chopra, who flew in and out of Mumbai over the weekend, is now slated to arrive in the city only days before her upcoming film, 'Bajirao Mastani', hits the marquee on December 18.

However, if the latest is to be believed, the indefatigable actress is apparently trying to come down for another day prior to the film's release. Buzz is that the actress is hoping to fly down around December 8-9 again from Montreal, where she is currently shooting for TV series, 'Quantico', for a short while. As the publicity blitzkrieg of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film gathers steam, PeeCee will be missing from the promotions scene. Hence, she is trying to juggle her tight schedule to be in Mumbai for another event of the film.

Says a source, "Her co-stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will be promoting the film alone. Priyanka's contract with the 'Quantico' makers has some strict paperwork, so it is difficult for her to take leave. However, she is working on getting a day or two off."

Adds the source, "The 'Quantico' folk are aware that her film is lined up for release, so they might just allow her a short break."

During the film's event in Mumbai on Saturday night at a suburban multiplex, PeeCee maintained that the film has shaped up so well that it will speak for itself and needs no in-your-face promotions.

Film festivals look down upon 'massy' films: Farah Khan

Film festivals look down upon 'massy' films: Farah Khan

Eight years after it regaled Bollywood audiences with its song and dance sequences, filmy story line about reincarnation and an ensemble cast, Farah Khan's "Om Shanti Om" was showcased at the 37th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) just recently. The filmmaker, however, feels that "commercial or massy" films are largely looked down upon at film festivals in India.

Farah was also feted in Cairo.

"When a foreign film festival honours you, I think, for us in a way, they get your movie. They get the business of your movie. But I think here (in India), the ones who organise the festivals, they tend to look down upon commercial hit films or what they call the masses' love," Farah told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The 50-year-old director's comment only seems relevant after a veteran Bengali actor Dhritiman Chatterjee, who has acted in films by auteurs as iconic as Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, objected to Bollywood star Anil Kapoor's 'tapori' dance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

Farah, who has made films like "Main Hoon Na" and "Happy New Year", said it's only ironic that "actors and commercial film directors" are invited to film extravaganzas to draw footfalls.

"They (people at film festivals) want to go for the niche highbrow intellectual films, but at the same time they want the actors and commercial directors to come for the festivals because that's what gets the crowd in and the press," said the outspoken choreographer-director, who's known for using colour and glamour in her movies.

Her "Om Shanti Om", which was screened in Cairo where Farah was honoured with the Faten Hamama Award for excellence in cinema, starred Shah Rukh Khan and launched Deepika Padukone. Interestingly, the movie had over 40 actors appearing in the course of the film, including 30 of them in the "Deewangi deewangi" song alone.

She hopes that film festivals on the home turf start showcasing a mix of commercial and non-commercial films.

"I think if they had a mix of both, it would be ideal... especially if they did not ignore the commercial movies... the good commercial movies," she said.

Perhaps steps are being taken as Salman Khan's blockbuster entertainer "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" not just set the cash registers ringing but also left people moist-eyed with a heartwarming story.

Meanwhile, films like "The Lunchbox", "Masaan", "Angry Indian Goddesses" and "Titli" are some offbeat movies from Hindi filmdom that have found prominence at movie galas.

Farah is now planning to make a movie on "girl power", which will be produced by her friend superstar Shah Rukh Khan's banner Red Chillies Entertainment.

Boney Kapoor brought Sridevi from heaven to kitchen: RGV

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has revealed his love for veteran actress Sridevi in his autobiography, ‘Guns and Thighs’. He describes Sridevi as the "Goddess of beauty" and blames her husband Boney Kapoor.

"It was a love letter. I was going overboard, but that was my feeling. Everyone can have a crush on anyone, be it on a real person or a celebrity, you enjoy that feeling of high. It is almost like a drug. To see Sridevi making tea in Boney Kapoor's kitchen was a huge letdown. I won't forgive him because he brought the angel down from heaven to the kitchen of his apartment," he said while confessing his love for the actress during a session at a literature festival in New Delhi.
RGV also expressed his feelings for actress Urmila Matondkar. He said that he has revealed in the book that capturing Urmila's beauty on camera was one of the reasons behind making ‘Rangeela’, which made her an overnight star.

"I honestly feel it is important for director to get obsessed with the characters. I think it is similar to how I shot Amitabh Bachchan in Sarkar. He is obviously not a woman but I was feeling a high to capture his close-ups and highlight his minutest of expressions. That way, I don't see a fundamental difference between a Rangeela and a Sarkar," he said.

RGV has dedicated his autobiography to author Ayn Rand, best known for his book The Fountainhead.

The filmmaker said it is his dream to make a movie on the book. "My greatest dream is to make a film on The Fountainhead, which I have been restraining from doing because it is so much in the mind and I am yet to able to decode that. For example if you read about Howard Roark or think about him then it is very difficult to see him in person," he said.

"The moment you see him in person, you would think how he is moving, how he will smile, how he will have a sip of coffee. But that's my dream to make the film," he added.

The team wanted the same dates as that of Dinu’s (Dinesh Vijan) film, which I’m doing next. I have also launched the book and I have read it a year ago but there are other things that need to be figured out," Kriti told IANS.

"There is nothing locked right now so I feel it's not right for me to talk about it," she added.
Talking about Chetan Bhagat's books, Kriti said that "filmy factor" is attached to Chetan’s books.
"I loved the book and I feel that all of Chetan's books have a filmy factor to them, so when you read them, you can imagine a film being made on it. I have enjoyed reading all his books and I always look forward to reading his books," she said.
