This 'Mysterious' Breast Infection is Gripping Indian Women. But Is There a Reason to Panic?

This
An increasing number of women are finding lumps and discharge -- a result of a "mysterious" breast infection that seem to have gripped Pune. And now, more such cases have come to fore from other metros as well. Medical experts have been perplexed with the alarming rate with which the infection was spreading and the cause behind it.
Talking to Dr. Anupama Mane, Consultant Breast Surgeon & HOD, Breast Services, Jehangir Hospital, Pune, shed more light on the issue, saying, “It is not a 'mysterious' disease, as termed by some media publications, and is named as Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis, where Idiopathic means ‘unknown cause’, Granulomatous means ‘long standing’ and Mastitis means ‘infection’. So the name says it all.”

Informing further, she said, “The infection is not new but since we have more means of diagnosing now, more and more cases are coming to limelight. It is a long-standing rare infection which is curable. It is self-limiting, that is, dies out gradually with medication and treatment, like viral infections.”

The doctor further informed that research reveals that the infection is more common in the developing countries than the developed ones, adding that cases have been found all over India, including Delhi and Mumbai, besides Pune.
