A woman allegedly committed suicide after having heated argument
with her husband over Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s recent remarks on growing
intolerance.
Twenty-four-year-old Sonam Pandey, a resident of Ukhari area
of Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district consumed poisonous substance after her
husband Mayank Pandey mocked the actor for his comments.
Sonam’s husband Mayank told police that he and his wife had
a heated discussion after reading a newspaper report on Aamir Khan’s statement.
The deceased’s father-in-law R P Pandey, a retired
veterinary surgeon, said that Sonam was a die-hard Aamir Khan fan. “When my son
made fun of Aamir Khan who wanted to settle abroad on the advice of his wife,
she got upset and ran into her room and locked herself in,” he said.
After a while, they heard a screaming and Mayank went in and
found her vomiting. They immediately rushed her to a private nursing home where
she died on Thrusday.
Kotwali police station chief Praful Srivastava said they are
investigating the matter and will proceed accordingly. The body of Sonam has
been sent for autopsy.
Mayank, who is employed with an NGO got married to Sonam in
2012 and they have a three-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, Sonam’s family has rejected the version told by
her in-laws. Sonam’s brother Ramesh has alleged that his sister was being
harassed for dowry for some time. He claimed that Sonam’s in-laws have cooked-up
and story to cover their foul play.
"We are told by the family that there was marital
discord.... We are waiting for the post-mortem report," Inspector Srivastava
said. "Since the deceased was married barely three years ago, we are not
ruling out anything," he added.
