Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan was stranded in flooded
city of Chennai which has been witnessing heavy downpour since the last month.
However, the actor is “safe and dry” and has shared the news of his safety on
his Twitter handle, much to the relief of his fans.
The incessant rain in the city has wrecked havoc in the city
rendering several people homeless and disrupting communication.
Stuck in the city with all flights cancelled, Abhishek took
to the micro-blogging site on Wednesday and posted, “Thank you all for the
concern. Am safe and dry. Thoughts and prayers with the people more severely
affected. #ChennaiFloods.”
Abhishek was in Chennai as a part of his association with
Indian Super League franchise Chennaiyin Football Club which he co-owns along
with Asian Paints owner Vita Dani.
The torrential rains and consequent flooding in Chennai have
brought airport operations to a standstill since 8 PM Tuesday when the level of
water on the taxiways rose to about two feet. The airfield was closed initially
for a period of three hours, which was subsequently extended up to 6 AM on
Wednesday morning.
However, the situation has deteriorated severely, leading to
submerging of entire operational area in approximately seven feet of water. All
incoming flights were diverted to other airports, except one international
flight which was cleared due medical priority.
Thirty-four aircraft are stranded at the airport and all
international and domestic flights to and from Chennai have been cancelled. Chennai
Aerodrome has been closed up to 12 noon of December 6.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted even more
heavy rain in the region for next four days. "Heavy rain accompanied by
strong winds may make the situation worse in Chennai," an IMD statement said.
