The heavy downpour since the past few days in Tamil Nadu has
thrown normal life out of gear. Several people have been rendered homeless and
communications disrupted in what is being called the worst rainfall of the
century. The torrents have affected not just common people, but affluent
celebrities have also not been spared.
‘Rang De Basanti’ actor Siddharth had to leave his house as
the rains have inundated his place. The actor who is a popular name in South
cinema took to Twitter to describe his woes and posted pictures of his house
submerged in water. He has also appealed for help to the flood-affected people
by providing any sort of possible assistance from food packages, drinking water
to conveyance.
The actor together with Chennai-based comedian and RJ Balaji
have taken the help of social media in their efforts to help the flood victims.
They have been constantly sending out tweets about the situation and
requirements of those who are stuck in the rain and severely affected.
“Bathrooms submerged. Water coming out of the drains. I am
an affluent actor. This is my house. Imagine rest of Tamil Nadu. House flooded.
Moving to the terrace. God save Tamil Nadu. Just spoke on CNN-IBN ... If you
are a concerned Indian please tell everybody you know about #TamilNadu. This is
a disaster. We are sinking,” he tweeted.
He also warned people to be careful saying, “Many people
died in their cars in the Bombay floods because power windows and central
locking jammed. Don’t sit in broken down cars. If you see anyone stuck in a
broken down car waiting for the #rain to stop... Please evacuate them to higher
ground. It is very unsafe. If you see people in water, please drop them to dry
land. If there's any way you can drive around please do. Help the relief work.
#TNflood.”
Siddharth also tweeted asking for food, drinking water and
transportation for the flood victims.
“We have a 5 car convoy patrolling affected areas in
#Chennai. Please collect genuine transport issues and post to me &
@rj_balaji #TNfloodIf anyone has innova or Scorpio cars to spare please contact
us. We need more vehicles. #TNflood If you can organise food packets in chennai
please contact me. We will have it picked up and delivered. Batches of 50-100
packets. #TNflood”
He also appealed to everyone to contribute in the relief operations
even if it is by staying indoors and not spreading misinformation.
“If you are not part of relief work please stay indoors.
People crowding bridges to see flood sights are a nuisance. Stay home. #TNflood.
“Crocodiles in d city and all other nonsense are just
rumours. Plz Stop spreading thse in watsapp and here. Will add more choas.”
The state has been witnessing torrential rains since last
month. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted even more heavy rain in
the region for next four days. "Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds may
make the situation worse in Chennai," an IMD statement said.
