'Everly' - Movie Review

'Everly'A; Action-thrillerDirector: Joe LynchCast: Salma Hayek Pinault, Jennifer Blanc, Gabriella Wright, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Togo Igawa, Laura CepedaRating:
This film, top-lining A-lister Salma Hayek, finds release in India a little too late in the day. The subject matter and the sheer din of unceasing violence may have been the determinant for that delay.
Everly (Hayek) is a call girl who turns approver against her gangster Boss Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe) - who in turn puts a hit on her and her family. Everly, therefore, has no option but to match wits and firepower against a ruthless opponent who will leave no stone unturned in his quest for vengeance.

Joe Lynch helms this action-thriller in a mixed blend of styles that quite obviously takes inspiration from a wide spectrum of genre films including Japanese horror, '60s grindhouse, Manga-influenced western actioners as well as video-game blood fests.
While it all looks stylish, there's not much consistency or attachment to be had in the telling. Despite the furious pace, there's not much of an adrenaline rush to be had and that's mainly because of the incongruity in styles and looming purposelessness of the mayhem embarked upon here.
Hayek is sincere and gives it her all but believability still turns up suspect. The lack of complexity and depth is what hurts much more than the ritualistic violence and stylised mayhem on display here.
