Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is planning to make a sequel of
his 2008 blockbuster film ‘Fashion’. The sequel will have an entirely new theme
and topic and will be a love triangle.
Bhandarkar who is known to portray strong female protagonists
in his films will also rope in a top actress for the sequel.
Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed the news on
Twitter.
"Madhur Bhandarkar planning #Fashion2 in mid-2016. Will
be a love triangle. Fresh subject. One top actress to be finalized soon,"
he wrote on the micro-blogging site.
Fashion starred Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranut in the
lead roles while Mugdha Godse, Samir Soni, Arjan Bajwa and Arbaaz Khan were
cast in supporting roles. The film proved to be a major turning point for
Priyanka and Kangana who won the National Film Awards for Best Actress and Best
Supporting Actress respectively.
It is not clear whether the sequel will reprise Priyanka in
the lead as the filmmaker has it will have a ‘top actress’. Most of Bhandarkar’s
films cast top Bolywood actress like Tabu, Bipasha Basu, Konkona Sen Sharma
etc. Only his latest flick ‘Calendar Girls’ starred five debutantes, but the
film did not do well. His previous film ‘Heroine’ starring Kareena Kapoor Khan
also failed to impress.
Bhandarkar is known to highlight social issues, the dark
side of the glamour world and the society at large through his films. ‘Calendar
Girls’, ‘Heroine’, ‘Fashion’ and ‘Page 3’ had similar premises, but the ‘Fashion’
sequel is said to exploit a fresh subject.
It will be interesting to see how Bhandarkar comes back post
the debacle of ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Heroine’ in 2016.
